Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Good Friday As Titans Cruise Past Canisius, 13-5

BUFFALO, NY (4/2/2021) -- Senior Brett Erskine tied his career-high with five goals and six points and senior Logan Shamblin registered 14 saves as the Titans started the game on a 5-0 run and never looked back in a 13-5 road win at Jesuit-rival Canisius on Friday afternoon.

With the win, Detroit Mercy moved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while Canisius fell to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in league play.

Erskine also added a team-high four ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore Luke Majick and freshman Will Edell had a goal and two assists, while senior Matt Blevins, junior AJ Van Voorhis and sophomore Ryan Birney each had a goal and an assist.

The Titans scored just a 1:10 into the game as junior Cam Kostus rifled one to the back of the net off a pass from Majick. Detroit Mercy then made Canisius pay for turning the ball over as goals by Blevins, two from Erskine and then the first career marker from freshman Cole Gellatly had the Titans up 5-0 with 4:47 left in the first.

Detroit Mercy led 7-2 at the break and 9-3 at the end of three as Shamblin kept the Golden Griffins at bay with a flurry of close cage saves. The Titans would break the game open in the fourth, scoring four goals in a span of 1:32 thanks to three consecutive faceoff wins by Jarzembowski, as he put an exclamation point to the offensive spurt scoring a goal of his own for a 13-3 advantage with 12:17 left.

Graduate senior Alex Jarzembowski was 12-of-20 at faceoffs, 10-3 after the first period, with three ground balls and a goal. Graduate senior Sam McClain had a caused turnover and three ground balls and senior Paul Manuszak also picked up three GB's.

The Titans outshot Canisius, 40-29. The defense also forced five caused turnovers as the Golden Griffins had 19 turnovers on the day and were just 15-of-24 on clears.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action next Friday, April 9, when the Titans travel to Monmouth for a 1:00 p.m. start.

First Period:
  • The Titans got on the board first a little more than a minute into the game as Majick found Kostus for the score
  • The Titans then took advantage of a Canisius turnover as Erskine found Blevins and he scored at the 12:25 mark
  • Off another turnover and failed clear attempt, Edell found Erskine and he beat the keeper to earn his 100th career point and a 3-0 lead with 9:10 left

Fourth Period:
  • Majick found Erskine and he posted his career-tying fifth goal at the 13:49 mark, which started a four-goal outburst over the next 1:32 to take total control
  • Jarzembowski won the faceoff and that led to a goal by Edell
  • He would win again and that would set up Birney's marker and finally, his next victory would see him streak down the field and fire on net for a goal and it was a 13-3 lead with 12:17 left
