DETROIT (8/6/2021) -- The final accolade in the career of University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse graduate senior Alex Akins was revealed today as the defenseman was tabbed Third Team CoSIDA At-Large Academic All-America®.

He is just the second Titan to earn the academic distinction following former teammate Matthew Vangalen in 2019 - also third team - and just the 19th Titan in school history to earn Academic All-America from CoSIDA. 

The three-time team captain had a tremendous career, putting his name into the Detroit Mercy record books in his five years. The 2021 Detroit Mercy President's Award winner, he was a four-time All-MAAC defenseman who finished his career sixth in school history with 52 caused turnovers and collected 79 ground balls, while playing in 59 career games - tied for seventh in school history - with 54 starts - fifth in the record book. 

He helped the team post a school record with nine total wins in 2018 as well as five conference victories in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, he was also part of a team that reached the MAAC Championship. 

Off the field, he was a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and was named a Senior CLASS Second Team All-American in 2021. He was a USILA Scholar All-American in 2020 and was a three-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team. 

He graduated with a 3.90 GPA and has a 4.0 in graduate school as he is obtaining his MBA. 

Akins was one of six lacrosse student-athletes to make the three-team At-Large list and was the only player from the MAAC.

The CoSIDA at-large sports are comprised of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew/rowing, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.
