Titans Tripped Up At Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (12/21/2022) -- Senior Gerald Liddell posted his sixth-straight double-double and graduate senior Antoine Davis scored 17 points, but a mid-game run by Cincinnati was too much to overcome as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 72-54 contest on the road on Wednesday night.

Liddell netted a team and game-high 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds with a pair of steals. Along with his 17 points, Davis also had six rebounds and three assists. Graduate senior Damezi Anderson added 11 points and six rebounds and graduate senior TJ Moss posted three points, tied his season-best with six boards and handed out a team and season-high six assists.

The Titans (5-8) had an early lead on the strength of a 12-0 run to jump out in front, 16-8. All five of the baskets were from three as Anderson knocked in three from distance and a trey by senior Jordan Phillips gave the team that eight-point advantage at the 12:27 mark.

The Bearcats (9-4) scored nine-straight points to take the lead, but Davis put the red, white and blue ahead, 18-17, with 8:10 left and again at 20-19 with under eight minutes to go.

The game was then tied four times in the next five minutes, the latest at 28-28 as Davis hit another jumper, but Cincinnati ended the half on a 9-0 spurt for a 37-28 lead at the break.

The Bearcats would take control extending the run to 18-straight points for a 46-28 score. They ran their lead to as many as 19, 52-33, with 12:38 left, but the Titans kept fighting. Liddell had a three-point play and a layup from graduate senior Buay Koka got the team within 13, 58-45.

Later on, a bucket by Liddell and a three from Davis cut it to 12, 64-52, with 4:38 on the clock. It was 12 again at 66-54 after Davis made two free throws but that was as close as the Titans got.

The Titans were just edged in rebounding, 43-40, but held Cincinnati to 6-of-34 from the outside.

Detroit Mercy will now get ready for conference play the rest of the way as it welcomes Green Bay to Calihan Hall on Dec. 29 and Milwaukee on Dec. 31. Tickets start at just $10 and a number of ticket packages are available by clicking here.
