Detroit Mercy Falls in Defensive Battle with Green Bay

Lewis leads Titans with 10 points

DETROIT (2/12/22) - Graduate student Janna Lewis scored a team-high 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting with six rebounds while graduate student Daija Moses added eight points and eight rebounds as the battle between two of the better defensive teams in the Horizon League lived up to its billing as Detroit Mercy fell 53-39 to visiting Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall. Sophomore Irene Murua once again came close to a double-double grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds while scoring seven points with graduate student Brandi Washington posting nine points going 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Lucia Fleta Robles and senior Imani McNeal also chipped in with three and two points respectively. Baskets were hard to come by as both teams struggled from the field with Detroit Mercy (0-23, 0-16) shooting slightly better at a 32.7% clip compared to 29.1% from Green Bay (15-5, 11-3 HL). Both teams also struggled from behind the arc as well hitting only six combined 3-pointers on 34 attempts.

Turnovers proved to be the key defensive difference for the Phoenix as they only committed eight for the game while forcing 24 Titan turnovers which led to a 22-7 points off turnovers advantage.

Murua set the tone early in the first quarter scoring six of the eight total points for the Titans as Green Bay ended the frame on a 14-2 run to take a 20-8 lead.

The low scoring defensive battle continued into the second quarter as the Titans got two buckets from Lewis, a 3-pointer from Fleta Robles and jumper from McNeal to outscore Green Bay 9-6 for the frame to trail 26-17 at the half.

Green Bay opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run to move ahead 34-17. Detroit Mercy responded with six points to trail 37-23 with 4:27 left in the quarter but only scored four more points the rest of the quarter to trail 43-27 entering the fourth.

Moses got a steal under the basket and hit a layup as Detroit Mercy opened the fourth quarter on a 8-1 run to pull within nine points at 44-35 with 3:28 to go. However, the Titans were only able to score four points down the stretch as Green Bay secured their seventh consecutive HL win.

The Titans travel to Windy City for a Valentine's Day showdown at UIC on Monday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. ET.
