DETROIT (2/20/2022) -- Senior
Antoine Davis scored a game-high 31 points and the Titan defense frustrated Wright State early on en route to building a 26-point lead as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team topped the Raiders, 80-75, on Dick Vitale Court on Sunday.
The win was the 14th in a row at home dating back to last season, the longest home winning streak since the red, white and blue won 17 in a row between the end of the 2011-12 and the start of the 2012-13 season.
Davis was 11-of-20 from the field and 4-of-9 from three and now has 2,605 career points, tying former Pistons great and McNeese State standout Joe Dumars for 37th in NCAA history.
The Titans (12-13, 9-6 HL) were hot from the start hitting 11 of their first 16 shots with six from distance and led 39-22 at the break. The lead grew to 26, 59-33, with 13 minutes left, but Wright State (16-13, 13-7 HL) was able to go on a run and trim the lead to five on a couple of occasions.
The Titans would then see Davis and junior
Noah Waterman hit 3-pointers and the team was 9-of-10 down the stretch at the line to seal the win.
Waterman had 12 points and five rebounds, while graduate senior
Kevin McAdoo had 11 points with three assists. Senior
Matt Johnson had nine points and a career-high nine rebounds with three assists and three steals.
Detroit Mercy shot 52.0% (26-of-50) from the field and 51.9% (14-of-27) from three, the fourth time this season the Titans have posted 50.0% in both categories. The defense also held Wright State to 29.6% (8-of-27) from the floor and 1-of-10 from three in the first half.
The Titans will be back in action on Thursday as first-place Cleveland State visits Calihan Hall.
First Period:
- Senior DJ Harvey and Davis started the game with back-to-back jumpers
- A three by Davis gave the team a 7-2 lead
- A layup by junior Mohamed Sylla and a basket by McAdoo had the red, white and blue up 13-6 with 12:20 on the clock
- The run continued to 10-0 as McAdoo and senior Willy Isiani buried 3-pointers for a 19-6 lead at 10:53
- Sophomore Kyle LeGreair then connected on his first-ever triple and the lead was 22-10 with 9:48 to go
- Davis landed one from three and then Isiani hit another for a 28-13 lead with under seven minutes left
- The Titans answered a 7-0 Wright State run with a three from McAdoo and a bucket from Davis for a 33-20 advantage with 4:10 remaining
- A trey from Waterman and then Davis went to the basket for a layup and he was fouled and his free throw had the Titans up 39-22 and that was the score at the break
Second Period:
- Isiani started the half with a layup and he was fouled and his three-point play had the Titans up 20, 42-22
- Waterman made one from distance and a bucket from Davis upped the lead to 21, 52-31, with 15:40 left
- Davis nailed a three, graduate senior Buay Koka made a free throw and then a triple from McAdoo and the red, white and blue had a commanding 59-33 advantage with 13:10 remaining
- Davis scored five-straight points with a 3-pointer and a jumper for a 64-42 lead with 9:36 on the clock
- A 21-5 spurt with a 12-0 run by the Raiders cut the lead to 64-54 with 5:30 remaining
- The Raiders would get within five, 66-61, with 3:20 left
- Davis would hit a jumper to make it 68-61, but the Raiders clawed back to 68-63 with 1:18 to go
- Waterman banged one in from behind the arc for a 71-63 lead and the Titans hit 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win
Game Notes:
- The Titans ended a six-game slide to Wright State, but WSU still leads the all-time series, 37-28, while the red, white and blue hold the advantage at home to 16-14
- The Titans began the season with nine-straight road games and, due to cancellations, played 13 of their first 16 and 18 of their first 23 on the road
- In fact, if there are no other additions or subtractions to the schedule, Detroit Mercy will play just nine of their 27 overall games at home as well as six of their 17 HL games
- The Titans have connected on at least nine 3-pointers in 16 games this season and the 18 against Milwaukee at home, tied a school record and is tied for the 11th most this season against DI competition
- The team currently ranks 11th in Division I in 3-point field goals per game (10.3) and 46th in three-point field-goal percentage (36.4%), tops in the HL in both statistics
- The Titans came into the game 12th in the nation in free throw percentage (78.2%), 87 in fouls per game (15.2) and 90th in turnovers per game (11.9), top four in the HL in all three
- Davis scored a Titan freshman record 48 points in the last win over Wright State in 2018-19
- Davis now has 73 career 20-point games, 25 career 30-point outings and four 40-point contests in 106 collegiate games and has also scored in double figures in all 106 games - reaching at least 17 points in 87 of them
- Davis' 2,605 points is just 91 behind Xavier's Byron Larkin (1984-88) for second in Horizon League history
- Davis comes into the game fifth all-time in NCAA history with 3.89, three-point field goals per game and has connected on a 3-pointer in 40-straight games and 102 of his 106 collegiate games with 57 career games with four or more triples, 21 with six or more, 10 games with seven or more, and has thrice connected on 10 in his career, tying a school record as well as breaking a conference tournament record
- Davis' 411 career triples is now tied for 16th in NCAA history, two outside of the top 15
- McAdoo was in double figures for the first time in four games - since he had 15 at NKU - and has now been in double figures nine times this season
- Johnson's career-high in rebounds was eight accomplished twice, the last against UIC at home
- Waterman has now been in double figures seven times in his last 10 games, tallying 11.1 points on 47.2% (35-of-74), including 24-of-54 (44.4%) from three in that span
- LeGreair's three was on his first-ever 3-point attempt
- Junior Madut Akec missed his fourth-straight game with an injury
