DETROIT (3/14/2022) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will see its season continue as the Titans have been chosen and accepted a spot in The Basketball Classic presented by Eracism.
The Titans will start the postseason tournament at Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. tip at Alico Arena.
The entire bracket and match-ups will be revealed later today. All of the games are set to be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Basketball Classic is a 32-team tournament with first-round games on campus sites starting March 14. This creates another bracket to follow and gives student-athletes across the country an opportunity to participate in the postseason and compete for a championship.
This will mark the 14th postseason appearance by the Titans and the first since their NIT bid in 2013. In its history, Detroit Mercy has played in seven NIT's (1960, 1961, 1965, 1978, 2001, 2002, 2013) and six NCAA (1962, 1977, 1979, 1998, 1999, 2012) tournaments.
If picked to host a game in the event, it would be the first postseason game at Calihan Hall since the 1978 NIT when the Titans defeated VCU, 94-86, with Terry Tyler scoring 19 points, Terry Duerod adding 18 and John Long posting 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Titans were 14-15 on the season and 10-7 in the Horizon League for sixth place, but the red, white and blue saw five home games - all conference games - canceled due to the pandemic. Senior
Antoine Davis is third in the nation in scoring at 23.9 points per game, second with 3.93 three-point field goals per game and sixth with 110 triples on the year, while his 2,710 career points are 23rd in NCAA history.
FGCU - out of the Atlantic Sun - was 21-11 on the year and 10-6 in conference play. The Eagles lost to eventual ASUN conference tournament champions Bellarmine in the quarterfinals of the ASUN championships.
