Titans Drop Double-Overtime Thriller As Harder Sets Draw Control Record

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (3/20/2022) -- Senior Elise Harder pulled down a school-record 19 draw controls as the Titans tallied a school-record 32 in the game, but the red, white and blue could not get one final goal in extra time as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-17 double-overtime heartbreaker to St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon.

Harder also scored a team-high four goals and added an assist, ground ball and caused turnover. The previous school record for draw controls was 16 by teammate Taylor Cantelon last year against Youngstown State, while the school record was 27 against Presbyterian in 2009, the first year of Titan lacrosse.

Redshirt sophomore Charlotte Dale had three goals and two assists, while sophomore Cat Kopchia registered two goals and three helpers. Redshirt senior Taylor Cantelon added six draw controls and two goals and junior Marina Butler posted a goal and two assists.

Freshman Meredith Leavell started in net and made nine saves, while junior Hannah Shrader came in to record four saves.

The game was tied at 17-all after regulation and after the first overtime, even though both teams had a few scoring opportunities. Shrader made two saves and senior Taryn McManus had a caused turnover for the defense to keep SBU off the scoreboard, but on offense, the Titans saw three shots turned away.

In the second overtime, Shrader made a save, but St. Bonaventure (1-5) was able to net the game-winner just two minutes into the extra period.

Detroit Mercy (1-7) saw St. Bonaventure score the first two goals of the game, but the Titans answered back with four-straight goals for a 4-2 lead with 3:46 left in the first. Dale got the offense going and then fed Harder to make it 2-2. Freshman Maddy Camm scored an unassisted goal and off a draw control win by Harder, Cantelon was able to beat the goalie.

Dale added another goal with 55 seconds left and then Kopchia found sophomore Sarah Meek and her marker gave the Titans a 6-3 lead after the first 15 minutes.

The Titans went on another 4-0 run in the second to go up 10-4. Sophomore Cecelia Vergara took a pass from Kopchia for the score before Butler assisted on McManus' strike with 10:39 on the clock. Dale netted another at 8:27 and then junior Annie Gilbert scored off the free position for the six-goal lead.

The Titans would also lead by six at 12-6 early in the third off back-to-back goals from Harder and Cantelon and again at 13-7 as Kopchia found Butler for the score with 8:55 remaining in the period.

The Bonnies would go on a 5-0 spurt to tie the game at 14-14, but Harder beat the goalie and then won a faceoff and fed Kopchia for a score and a 16-14 advantage with 10:24 left. St. Bonaventure scored three in a row for a 17-16 lead, but the Titans won another draw control as McManus won the ball and that led to Harder's four of the contest with 49 seconds remaining and the game would go into extra frames.

The red, white and blue outshot St. Bonaventure, 42-33, and were 8-of-12 on clears.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Saturday, March 26, when the Titans head back into MAC play with a game at Kent State.
