KANSAS CITY, Mo. (9/5/22) - Graduate student
Ryan Pierson and junior
Samory Powder each scored their first goals of the season while sophomore
Baldeep Gill added his first career assist as Detroit Mercy dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 setback at UMKC on Monday night. With the game tied at 2-2, the Roos got the game-winning goal late in the 88th minute.
Detroit Mercy (1-2-1) got on the board just three minutes into the game. Off a throw-in, a UMKC defender pushed the ball over to Gill who delivered a nice ball through traffic over to a streaking Pierson who got behind the last defender. UMKC goalkeeper Cooper Clark came out to challenge but Pierson was able to dribble around Clark and slot the ball into the back of the empty net for a 1-0 lead.
UMKC (2-2-0) got the equalizer in the 23rd minute off a penalty kick.
In the 34th minute, Powder gave the Titans a 2-1 lead after connecting on a beautiful free kick where he placed a shot into the left upper 90 past Clark from just outside the box.
However, the lead would only last six minutes as the Roos got their second equalizer of the match off a header tying the game at 2-2 in the 40th minute.
Both teams played even for the entire second half until UNKC connected on another header for the game-winning goal to seal the win with just two minutes remaining.
Detroit Mercy continues their road swing at Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
