Detroit Mercy Opens Home Stand with Setback to #HLWBB Leader Cleveland State

DETROIT (1-26-23) - Freshman Amaya Burch scored a team-high 13 points reaching double-figures for the third consecutive game while junior Irene Murua was in double-figures for the fifth straight game with 10 points going 4-for-4 from the free throw line as Detroit Mercy fell 107-65 to #HLWBB leader Cleveland State on Thursday night at Calihan Hall.

Freshman Maite Lara Garcia just missed her career-high by two points scoring nine while shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 1-for-1 from the free throw line. Junior Lucia Fleta Robles chipped in with eight points hitting two 3-pointers and going 2-for-2 from the line while matching a career-high six rebounds. Senior Imani McNeal returned to the lineup from injury adding seven points going 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Freshman Ana Cabañas Llorens also had seven points while sophomore Akyia Baker has six. 

In total, five players were perfect from the charity stripe as Detroit Mercy (3-17, 1-10 HL) went 12-for-12 and shot 22-for-54 from the field (40.7%). Conversely, Cleveland State (18-3, 9-2 HL) shot a blistering 38-for-62 (61.3%) from the field, 7-for-13 (53.8%) from long range, and 24-for-29 (82.8%) from the free throw line.

CSU opened the game on fire going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field to take a 16-2 lead. The Titans' offense got going connecting on three 3-pointers to end the quarter on a 5-0 run to trail 31-17 after the first quarter.


In the second quarter, Detroit Mercy went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line and hit five shots from the field but could not close the gap as they trailed 52-33 at the half.

Burch hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter but the Viking's hot shooting continued as they posted 35 points in the frame and added another 20 points in the fourth while holding the Titans to just 10 points. 

Detroit Mercy's four-game #HLWBB home stand continues against Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
