Davis Repeats As Horizon League Player Of The Year

INDIANAPOLIS (2/27/2023) -- For the second-straight year and the seventh time in Titan history, a Detroit Mercy men's basketball player was named the best in the league as graduate senior Antoine Davis was tabbed the Horizon League Player of the Year on Monday.

Davis - who won the Nike #HLMBB Player of the Week accolade six times on the season and a record 15 times in his career - earns the award after sharing the honor last year.

He joins Jermaine Jackson (1999), Rashad Phillips (2000, 01), Willie Green (2003) and Ray McCallum (2013) as the sole winner of the award. He is the seventh player in league history to win the honor a second time and the sixth to be named in back-to-back years.

His selection to the All-League First Team is the fifth of his career as he already came into the season as the only player in conference history with four First Team nods.

Davis currently leads the nation in scoring (28.1 ppg.), total points (870), total 3-pointers (149), 3-pointers per game (4.83) and total field goals (282). He is on pace to own the NCAA scoring crown as his 28.1 points would be the second-highest in school history behind Spencer Haywood's 32.1 in 1968-69 and the highest in Horizon League history, ahead of the 27.6 by Loyola Chicago's Alfredrick Hughes in 1984-85. He has also led the league in scoring in all five of his collegiate campaigns.

Davis has a league-best 26, 20-point games, 13, 30-point outings and four 40-point outbursts, with the four 40-point games the most since Campbell's Chris Clemons' four in 2018-19. He had two separate occasions of back-to-back 40-point games, the first player to register that feat since LSU's Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf in 1989-90 and at one point, had reached 30 in five-straight games, the longest 30-point streak in his career and by anyone in the NCAA in the last 25 years.

In conference play alone, he tallied 30.1 points and 3.8 assists - fifth in HL only games - while shooting 42.3% from the field and 42.1% from three. He scored at least 20 in 18 of his 20 conference games and 30+ in 11 affairs.

The two-time All-Horizon League Team All-Academic honoree enters the Barbasol Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship with 3,604 career points, 63 shy of Pete Maravich's NCAA record 3,667.

The Titans will open the playoffs at home as the eighth seed and host ninth-seeded Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday on Dick Vitale Court in Calihan Hall. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
