DETROIT (8-20-23) - Senior
Erica Toupin posted her first goal of the season as Detroit Mercy dropped a 5-2 decision to visiting Morehead State on Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.
Sophomore
Sophia Blankenship almost got Detroit Mercy (0-1-1) on the board just two minutes into the game as she ripped a shot past Morehead State (1-0-1) keeper Erin Gibbs but the ball hit the crossbar.
In the 16th minute, sophomore
Soraya Puerto-Khalil drove the ball deep down the right side and put pressure on a Morehead defender. She turned and fired a cross that was directed into the back of the net by a second Morehead defender for an own goal moving the Titans ahead 1-0.
Just three minutes later in the 19th minute, Blankenship once again could not catch a break as she fired another shot off the crossbar.
The Eagles then scored three consecutive goals getting the equalizer in the 27th minute followed by goals in the 32nd and 41st minute for a 3-1 advantage.
With just eight seconds remaining in the first half, Toupin lined up for a free kick just outside the box and fired a laser into the upper 90 pulling the Titans with a goal at 3-2.
In the second half, the Titans increased the offensive pressure looking for the equalizer but couldn't draw even. In the 71st minute, sophomore
Megan Malek assessed a second yellow card and was sent off as a red card leaving Detroit Mercy playing with 10 women. Morehead State took full advantage and added two more goals in the 74th and 76th minutes to seal the game.
Detroit Mercy opens a two-game road swing at Canisius on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 7 pm.
