CHICAGO (9-8-23) - Graduate Student
Hailey Matthews scored her first career goal in a Titans uniform off a corner kick and added an assist as Detroit Mercy recorded their first win of the season as they rolled past over Chicago State 4-2 on Friday night.
Sophomores
Abbey Lodato and
Soraya Puerto-Khalil scored their first goals of the season while junior
Ashley Bates added her second goal. Senior
Gabby Ketola and junior
Adriana Mroz each added an assist.
Chicago State (1-5) wasted little time posting a tally just six minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead.
Lodato's bid for the equalizer in the 11th minute was a thing of beauty. She set up for a free kick just outside the 18-yard line and fired a shot that beat CSU goalkeeper Julie Arballo to the high right side upper 90 of the goal.
In the 17th minute, the Titans delivered another well-excited goal to take a 2-1 lead. Mroz sent a long ball from the backfield that Ketola redirected with a header to a wide-open Puerto-Khalil who got behind the defense. She took the ball and slotted a shot that beat the keeper to the low left side.
The Titans added their second goal of the game off a set piece. This time, Matthews sent in a corner kick cross that Bates was able to get under in traffic and connect on a header into the back of the net giving UDM a 3-1 lead in the 55th minute.
In the 77th minute, Matthews struck again from the corner kick spot. This time, she was able to send a cross into the box that curved and deflected off the goalie's outstretched arm into the back of the net for a commanding 4-1 lead.
Detroit Mercy returns home to host Concordia for senior day on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
