DETROIT (1/19/2024) -- Sophomore
Marcus Tankersley tallied a game-high 23 points, but the Titans had trouble getting the defense going as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was downed, 105-64, on Saturday.
Tankersley was 7-of-15 from the field and 8-of-11 at the free-throw line, with three rebounds and a block. Graduate senior
Edoardo Del Cadia had 17 points, three rebounds, three steals and a block and senior
Jayden Stone registered seven points, a team-high five rebounds and two steals.
The Titans (0-20, 0-9 HL) started the game with five straight points as Del Cadia got inside for a layup, and Tankersley followed with a foul, connecting on a free throw.
The game then had three ties and seven lead changes as Stone gave the team a 9-6 lead with a triple and Del Cadia hit one of his own for a 14-11 advantage with 11:17 to go. Del Cadia also had the Titans in front, 16-15, at the 10:15 mark with another layup, and junior
Jamail Pink drilled a trifecta for a 21-20 advantage at the 8:15 mark.
Youngstown State (14-6, 6-3 HL) went on a run for a 40-28 lead with under four minutes left, when Tankersley ended that with a trey. The Penguins then ended the half on a 15-7 spurt for a 55-38 lead at the break.
UDM tried to get it going in the second half, but YSU opened up a 67-42 lead four minutes in and the Titans just could not get any closer.
Pink posted eight points, while graduate senior
Emmanuel Kuac had five with two rebounds. Junior
Mak Manciel had two points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal and senior
Kyle LeGreair added two steals.
The Titans shot 40.0% from the field and were 11-of-14 (78.6%) at the line, while coming away with 10 steals.Â
Detroit Mercy will be back in action next week as the red, white and blue travel to Wisconsin to battle Milwaukee on Thursday and Green Bay on Saturday.
