Four Titans Net Double Figures In Setback At Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wisc. (1/26/2024) -- Senior Jayden Stone led four Titans in double figures with 20 points, but Green Bay was able to go on a second-half run and pull away as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 78-64, on Saturday afternoon at the Resch Center.

Stone also added seven rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block, while sophomore Marcus Tankersley tallied 17 points, four assists and two rebounds. Graduate senior Edoardo Del Cadia posted 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal and junior Mak Manciel registered 10 points and two rebounds.

It was a game of runs as both teams used scoring spurts to go back and forth with 11 ties and nine lead changes. 

Detroit Mercy (0-22, 0-11 HL) was down five at the half, but started the second period with nine-straight points to surge ahead 38-34. Stone had back-to-back buckets, the second as he was fouled and hit the free throw, and Tankersley followed with two-straight scores for a 38-34 lead three minutes in. The lead was then four, 40-36, as Del Cadia got inside for a layup.

Green Bay (14-9, 9-3 HL) would score six straight to retake the lead, but Stone hit two free throws to knot it at 42-42, and a three-point play by Del Cadia had the team up 45-43 at the 13:46 mark. 

The Phoenix would take the lead for good, 59-49, on a 16-5 spurt over the next six minutes. Manciel ended that with a 3-pointer and the Titans were also within seven at 61-54 after two free throws from Tankersley, but Green Bay then used a 10-2 clip to widen the margin to 71-56 with 3:43 to go. 

Redshirt freshman Abdullah Olajuwon had two points, five rebounds and an assist. Senior Kyle LeGreair added two boards and graduate senior Emmanuel Kuac recorded two points and two caroms. 

The Titans shot 38.3% (19-of-49) from the field and were 22-of-27 at the free-throw line (81.5%). 

Stone hit a three and four early points from Del Cadia had the Titans up 9-4 just five minutes into the game. The Titans then went on a 7-0 run for a 20-15 lead at the 8:46 mark as Tankersley and Olajuwon hit a pair of free throws and Stone knocked down a three. 

Green Bay went back in front, 22-20, but Tankersley got inside for a basket and split a pair at the line. After a Phoenix miss, Tankersley and  Manciel nailed back-to-back jumpers for a 27-22 advantage with 3:05 remaining, but Green Bay ended the half on a 12-2 charge for a 34-29 score at the break. 

Detroit Mercy will return home for two games as the red, white and blue host Cleveland State on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., and Robert Morris on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets by clicking here.
