Donovann Toatley led the way with 14 points, but the Titans saw Green Bay go on a mid-game run and that was the difference as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 69-51 contest on Thursday night.
Sophomore
Marcus Tankersley had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists and graduate senior
Edoardo Del Cadia netted nine points and grabbed six boards with two steals and a block.
Detroit Mercy (0-16, 0-5 HL) saw Green Bay (9-7, 4-1 HL) start the game on an 8-2 run, but the Titans came back with a 10-2 clip. Junior
Mak Manciel got the offense going with a three and after a Phoenix basket, Tankersley hit a jumper to make it a 10-7 game. Del Cadia had a basket and then split a pair at the line and Manciel got inside for another bucket to give the Titans a 12-10 lead at the 11:38 left.
Toatley would knot the game twice at 17-17 and 19-19 with 4:36 left, but Green Bay ended the half on a 15-4 charge for a 34-23 advantage at the break. The Phoenix would start the second period with 10 straight points to jump out in front, 44-23, and the red, white, and blue could not recover.
Detroit Mercy did not give up, scoring eight in a row to trim a 26-point deficit to 17, 62-45, with 7:36 left. Tankersley began that with a basket, and after a three from graduate senior
Emmanuel Kuac, freshman
Ryan Hurst pulled up for a jumper, but the Titans couldn't get any closer.
Hurst ended with eight points and sophomore
Tyree Davis had two points and a season-high six boards. Kuac recorded three points, four rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal and Manciel netted five points.
Detroit Mercy forced 15 turnovers and registered just seven while going 9-of-10 at the free-throw line.
The Titans will now get ready for Milwaukee on Saturday, with the opening tip scheduled for 1:00 p.m. inside Calihan Hall.
Game Notes:
- Green Bay leads the overall series, 36-31, but the Titans still own an 18-14 edge at home
- This was just the Titans' fourth home game of the season compared to 12 road match-ups so far
- The Titans have now used 12 different starting line-ups in their first 16 games due to injury
- Detroit Mercy has not hit double-digit 3-pointers in all 16 games, the longest streak since going 74 straight between the last five games of the 2009-10 season and the end of the 2011-12 campaign
- Detroit Mercy has forced double-digit turnovers in seven of its' 16 games on the year
- Tankersley has now scored in double figures in 14 of the last 18 games dating back to last season
- Toatley was in double figures for the seventh time this year
- Del Cadia has scored in double figures in seven games and has grabbed at least five rebounds in 12 of the 16 games this season
- Davis' previous high in rebounds was five at Northwestern
- Kuac's three blocked shots were the most since Damezi Anderson had three at home against IUPUI last season
