The first half was a case of very close moments for the Titans (10-8-2).
The game was scoreless for a majority of the first half before Northern Kentucky (12-6-1) got on the board in the 38th minute.
The Titans had a golden opportunity for the equalizer in the 35th minute as Washington tapped a loose ball off a free kick that went past NKU goalkeeper Megan Gessner, but the last defender was able to clear the ball just before it reached the goal line for the team save.

Abbey Lodato's turn to come close with an equalizing big as she set up for a corner kick and sent in a high-bending shot that almost went directly into the upper right 90 but just missed hitting the top of the crossbar.
In the 43rd minute, Washington had another great chance as she got the ball in space and ripped a shot that appeared to be bending into the goal. However, Gessner guessed right and was able to tip the ball at the last second, making it ring off the post to turn away the equalizing bid.
In the second half, Detroit Mercy had five of their six corner kick opportunities and posted seven shots with three on goal but couldn't get the equalizer.
