Tankersley Tallies 22 At Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (2/28/2024) -- Sophomore Marcus Tankersley dropped a team-high 22 points as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 69-55, at Youngstown State on Wednesday night.

Tankersley was 10-of-21 shooting with three assists and two rebounds. Graduate senior Edoardo Del Cadia tallied seven points, a team-high 10 boards and matched his career high with four steals, while senior Jayden Stone scored seven points, grabbed six boards, handed out three assists, and came away with two steals.

The Titans (1-29, 1-18 HL) got off to a slow start on offense as Youngstown State (22-9, 14-6 HL) took a 9-0 lead seven minutes into the contest when Tankersley had two straight baskets. YSU was up 17-7 before Tankersley answered with six-straight points to trim the deficit to 17-13 with 9:26 on the clock.

The Penguins went on a 12-0 spurt before graduate senior Emmanuel Kuac ended that with a triple as UDM trailed at the break, 33-19.

In the second half, Kuac drained a three to start the period to pull the team within 11, 33-22, but the Penguins gradually raised their lead to as many as 22, 50-28. 

Stone hit a three to stop a run and senior Kyle LeGreair rang in a trifecta to make it 57-38 with 5:50 remaining. Youngstown State took its largest lead of 23, 64-41, at 4:05 mark, but UDM ended the game on a 10-3 as junior Tobin Schwannecke hit a three to close the contest out.

LeGreair had a season-high six points with six boards, three assists, two steals and a block. Kuac added eight points, three rebounds, two assists and a block and Schwannecke grabbed a season-best four caroms.

The Titans were just edged on the glass, 40-38, but posted 10 steals.

Detroit Mercy will end the regular season on Saturday as the red, white and blue visit #MetroSeries-rival Oakland, with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m.

  • Detroit Mercy has dominated the all-time series, 40-18, but Youngstown State has now won nine of the last 11 meetings
  • The Titans are 17-11 all-time on the road, winning seven of the last 12 trips to the Beeghly Center

  • LeGreair's season-high was five points against Milwaukee and IUPUI
  • LeGreair's career-high in rebounds is seven against Robert Morris last season
  • Schwannecke has hit a three in three of the last four games
  • Schwannecke's career-high in rebounds is five at Northwood as a member of GVSU in 2021
