COLLEGE PARK, Md. (8-30-24) - For the second consecutive game juniors
Guershom Sylvain and
Casey McCarthy recorded goals as Detroit Mercy battled in the second half with two tallies in a 5-2 setback at Maryland on Friday night at Ludwig Field.
"We challenged ourselves with the schedule we set up and tonight was a great test for our squad," said Head Coach
Nate Kopunek. "We are so proud of this group and the way they fought for the entire 90 minutes on the road at a Big Ten opponent. We will learn from the mistakes in this game and will look to bounce back once again."
Maryland (1-1-1) jumped on the board early in the game as William Kulvik connected on a long shot from the center circle in the 12th minute. The Terps went on to add four more goals to take a 5-0 lead at halftime.
The Titans (1-2) didn't quit in the second half as McCarthy headed a cross that hit a defender with the ball going right back to him. He then fired the rebound into the back of the net putting UDM on the board.
In the 87th minute, the Titans kept battling as McCarthy got the ball forward to sophomore
Drew Pierson who slotted it to Sylvain who got behind the defenders on the left side inside the box. He then fired a shot between the goalkeeper's legs for his third goal over the last two games.
UDM returns home to Titan Field for a Labor Day showdown against Chicago State on Monday, Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. The game is the second leg of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team who will take on Madonna at 1 p.m.
