Detroit Mercy Battles in First Setback of the Season at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (11-16-25) - For the second straight game, graduate student Jasmine Edwards led Detroit Mercy in scoring with 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting with six rebounds as the Titans shot 56.8% (21-for-37) from the field and 50.0 % from 3-point range (3-for-6) but couldn't get over the hump with a 66-52 setback at Toledo on Sunday afternoon at Savage Arena.

Three Titans (1-1) had seven points in graduate student Nisea Burrell, sophomore Anna Lassan, senior Myonna Hooper, and sophomore Maya Anderson. Junior Brendha Schwartz chipped in with four points, while graduate student Aaliyah McQueen and freshman Naïma Diawara each had two points.

Despite Detroit Mercy's hot shooting from the floor and long range, Toledo (1-2) had 26 points off 22 Titan turnovers and went 18-for-26 (69.2%) from the free throw line compared to 7-for-17 (41.2%) for UDM, which proved to be the difference.

Toledo got off to a quick 15-2 start to open the game before a jumper and a 3-pointer from Anderson ended the run, cutting the deficit to 17-9. Back-to-back layups by Schwartz and Edwards pulled UDM closer as they trailed by seven, 22-15, at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive battle as UT outscored UDM 12-7 in the frame to lead by 12 points, 34-22, at the break.

Out of the four-minute media timeout in the third, Diawara hit a layup, followed by a steal from McQueen and a fast break layup from Schwartz, pulling the Titans within seven points at 45-38. However, the Rockets closed with a 10-5 run to lead by 15 points, 54-39, heading into the fourth.

Lassa drained a 3-ball as the Titans continued to battle, scoring the next eight points to trail 59-47 with six minutes to go. However, they couldn't inch any closer down the stretch.

The Titans return home to take on their second consecutive Mid-American Conference school with a showdown against in-state foe Central Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m.
