UDM Upended At Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (2/5/2025) -- The Titans and Colonials traded runs throughout the game, but Robert Morris had one more spurt as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 71-56 contest on the road on Wednesday night.

Junior Orlando Lovejoy had a team-high 17 points with six assists, four steals and three rebounds. Freshman TJ Nadeau had 16 points and seven boards, while graduate senior Emmanuel Kuac ended with seven points and five rebounds.

The Titans (8-17, 4-10 HL) tied tIe game at 43-43 and trailed just 53-50 with 8:43 left, when Robert Morris (17-8, 9-5 HL) went on a 14-2 run to take control of the game.

The first half was a back and forth affair, with neither side leading by more than four points. Lovejoy and Nadaeu had six points each in the opening 20 minutes, while Kuac added four. The Titans also dominated the glass in the first half, outrebounding the Colonials 20-12. 

Detroit Mercy shot 10-of-25 (40%) from the field as a team in the first half. 

Robert Morris took an eight point lead early in the second half, but that was quickly erased as a Nate Johnson three-pointer with 17:07 left cut the deficit to just two. 

The first 10 minutes of the second half was much like the first half, with both sides trading baskets and neither one gaining a real edge. RMU went ahead by seven with 16:02 left, but the Titans quickly answered with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 41-41 with 14:32 remaining. 

RMU again went ahead by eight with 11:11 to go, but the Titans refused to quit and got to within three points with 7:57 remaining in the game following a pair of free throws by Nadeau. 

That was the closest Detroit Mercy got however, as the Colonials closed the game on a 16-4 run to seal the victory. 

Overall, the Titans shot 20-of-52 (38.5%) from the field, 5-of-16 (31.3%) from three-point range, and 11-of-16 (68.8%) from the charity stripe. Detroit Mercy outrebounded Robert Morris 35-28.

Detroit Mercy returns home to take on Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM on ESPN+. 

Game Notes:
  • Despite being 208 miles apart, this was just the 11th career meeting between the two schools as the Titans are 7-4 all-time, 6-4 since the Colonials joined the Horizon League in 2020 but 2-3 on the road
  • The 18 turnovers were the most since committing 18 at Loyola earlier in the season
  • Detroit Mercy came into the game second in the Horizon League and 62nd in the country with 38.2 rebounds per game and fifth in the HL and 82nd in the country with 11.9 offensive boards per game
  • Detroit Mercy has now tallied double-digit free throws 18 times on the year
  • Junior Duane Rogers III, who was just added to the roster after the first semester, registered his first points and field goal in his first game
  • Lovejoy has now scored in double figures in 18 games, grabbed at least three rebounds in 21 games and handed out at least three assists in 17 games and five or more in eight
  • Lovejoy has at least one steal in 20 games with eight multi-steal contests
  • Nadeau has now scored in double figures seven times this season
  • Nadeau has 11 triples in the last three games
  • Johnson has recorded 22 games with three or more rebounds
  • Freshman Ryan Kalambay had a season-high four assists
