Women's Basketball To Begin National Search For New Coach

DETROIT (3/28/2025) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball program will conduct a national search for a new head coach as Kate Achter announced her resignation to accept the head coaching position at Western Michigan.

"We would like to thank Coach Achter for her efforts in rebuilding the Titan program and putting us in a position to contend for a Horizon League championship," said Director of Athletics Robert C. Vowels, Jr.

Achter took over a UDM program that had won 11 games in the previous five years and posted a 37-56 record in her three seasons. In her second year on the sidelines, Achter led Detroit Mercy to a 17-16 record, marking the first winning season since 2016-17. She also recorded wins in the Horizon League Tournament in back-to-back years after defeating Milwaukee in the first round this season.

The University will begin the search for a new coach immediately by establishing a search advisory committee of alumni, former Titan student-athletes, donors and supporters, faculty, staff, and University leaders. Supporting this effort will be Collegiate Sports Associates (CSA), a leading college athletics executive search firm.

The University will decline further comment on the search process until its completion.
