Men's Lacrosse Set's Eyes On In-State Rivalry

Senior Danton Molotky and the Titans will look for a win at Michigan.
DETROIT (2/8/2026) -- Few match-ups generate more excitement than an in-state rivalry, and the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team is set to reignite one of Michigan's most compelling showdowns when the Titans make the trip to Ann Arbor to face the Wolverines for a highly anticipated battle on Tuesday.

Game time has been moved up to 2:00 p.m., and will be streamed live on Big Ten Network +.

The game marks the first meeting between the two programs since 2022 and the fifth all-time. Michigan currently holds a 4–1 advantage, including a 2–0 record in Ann Arbor.

The Titans started the year with a 19-3 setback at #10 Ohio State. Senior Kyle Grant tallied four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and a goal, while graduate senior Sean Henige posted four GB's and two takeaways.

Redshirt sophomores Marcus Thundercloud and Andrew Parker each had goals, and freshman Tommy Thompson registered two caused turnovers.

Michigan comes into the match-up riding momentum after a 24–2 victory over Mercyhurst and a 14-7 win at Marquette.

Detroit Mercy, meanwhile, will look to capitalize on the rivalry's intensity and the familiarity that comes with it, aiming to secure a defining win for the program.

True Michigan
  • There is a strong in-state presence on both rosters, as eight Wolverines and 13 Titans hail from Michigan, meaning 21 athletes will take the field with personal pride and bragging rights on the line.

First time in a while
  • The game marks the Titans' first meeting with the Wolverines since 2022, a game that the Wolverines won 21-5, adding renewed significance to an instate clash. In that game, Jakob Hemme tied a school record with 28 saves.

The Last Mach-Up
  • Of the Titans' 43-man roster, only graduate seniors Harold Skinner, Caden Loken, and Sean Henige were a part of the team's last match-up with the Wolverines.
  • However, Titans assistant coach Tyler Hart '23 and Director of Operations Ivan Progar '23 were also suiting up for the red, white and blue, so there is still a lot of familiarity in the locker room.

Clair Vision
  • Against the Buckeyes, redshirt junior Cooper St. Clair made 14 saves, anchoring the defense between the pipes.
  • St. Clair played his high school lacrosse just 30 minutes outside of Ann Arbor at Detroit Catholic Central, adding more local connections to the game against the Wolverines.

Young Talent
  • Freshman Dylan Belliveau made an immediate impact in the season opener, recording his first collegiate point with an assist to redshirt sophomore Marcus Thundercloud, who buried the Titans' first goal of the 2026 season.
  • Defensive Midfielder Tommy Thompson finished with two caused turnovers, while Luke Zajdel contributed a ground ball and a few shots on goal, helping UDM's effort on both ends.

Picking Up Where He Left Off
  • Sophomore Andrew Parker had his fingerprints all over last Sunday's match-up at #10 Ohio State, with a goal and two ground balls.
  • After a strong freshman season that saw Parker's playing time steadily increase, the young midfielder hailing from Lake Orion, Michigan, has carried over the production from the end of the 2025 season into the start of the 2026 campaign.

Thunder Strikes

  • Redshirt sophomore Marcus Thundercloud - who scored a goal in the season opener - is coming off an outstanding season that saw him earn NEC Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-NEC honors.
  • He was the first Titan freshman to earn a Rookie of the Year accolade since 2015.
  • Despite missing three games with a hand injury, he was second on the team with 22 goals - 10th in the NEC - and tied for second with 24 points. His 2.20 goals per game were sixth in the conference and 57th in DI.

Get By Me

  • Senior Kyle Grant is coming off a great year, ending with a selection to the NEC First Team All-NEC and All-Tournament Team.
  • At Ohio State, he had four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and his second career goal.
  • He currently ranks 10th in school history with 39 caused turnovers.
  • Last season, he led the team with 26 caused turnovers - eighth in school history and 15th in DI - and 44 ground balls. He topped the NEC and was fifth in the nation with 2.00 caused turnovers per game, and was seventh in the league and 78th in DI with 3.38 ground balls per game.

Short Stick Big Defense
  • Senior Jackson Ewald's stat sheet might seem light, but the short-stick midfielder is one of the best in the business and was named Second Team All-NEC last year.
  • He started the year with a takeaway at Ohio State.
  • Learning from the best short-stick defensive midfielder in school history in head coach Charlie Hayes, Ewald posted a career-high six caused turnovers and 16 ground balls.
  • Ewald recorded a career-best two caused turnovers and a career-high three ground balls in the NEC Championship against Robert Morris.

Showing Our Skin

  • Graduate senior Harold Skinner is back to give the Titans more experience at attack and in the midfield.
  • He had four ground balls at Ohio State.
  • He was fifth on the team with a career-best 14 points and seven goals and fourth with a career-high seven assists last season. He also had a career-high six caused turnovers and a career-best 19 ground balls.

I Will Take A Henige

  • Graduate senior Sean Henige is back to help provide the Titans with another standout long pole and had two caused turnovers and four ground balls in the season opener.
  • He has played in 39 career games, starting 36, and registered 36 caused turnovers - 11th in school history - and 71 ground balls.

We Need Moore

  • Junior Gavin Moore has played in all 27 games as a short-stick defensive midfielder since entering the Motor City.
  • He collected a pair of ground balls in the opener after tallying 10 caused turnovers and 14 ground balls.

Berrylicious

  • Sophomore Malakhi Berry picked up three ground balls in the season opener.
  • Last season, he missed a few games with an injury, but when he was healthy, he showed the talent to be one of the best LSM's in the NEC.
  • He saw action in 10 games as a rookie and had seven caused turnovers and 15 ground balls with a goal.
