DETROIT (8-20-26) - Senior
Eva Hill was solid in goal, making five saves while facing 23 total shots and was seconds away from her second consecutive shutout. However, it was not meant to be, as Toledo connected on a free kick with just three seconds left in the game to steal a 1-0 win over Detroit Mercy on Thursday night at Titan Field.
Detroit Mercy was called for a foul just outside the top of the box with five seconds remaining in the game. Normally, the clock doesn't stop on a foul in this situation, but the ball was inadvertently cleared away by a Titan defender on instinct, which in turn forced the referee to stop the clock with three seconds left. This allowed Toledo (1-1) to set up for the free kick, which Ella Zoerhoff curved the ball around the wall into the upper right 90 for the game-winner.
Detroit Mercy's (1-2) best chance to take the lead came earlier in the 76th minute when junior
Teagan Ferrington fired in a long-range free kick that beat the goalkeeper but rang off the crossbar.
The Titans and Rockets played to a 0-0 draw during the first half, with Hill making three saves.
Detroit Mercy hits the road for a match at Valparaiso on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m.
