What They Had To Say:
UDM Athletic Director Keri Gaither: "After six years of planning, UDM was the proud host of a fantastic NCAA Final Four! Over the last few days, I’ve talked to hundreds of people including visitors, the participating teams, the NCAA Staff and Men's Basketball Committee, our alums and boosters, and we’ve been receiving rave reviews on everything th
at our Detroit Titan staff, coaches and student-athletes have been part of."
Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo: "In closing, I also want to thank the University of Detroit. They are the host school. I don't know, everybody will have their own opinion of Detroit and what happened in this tournament. But if there was a more beautiful setting for a college basketball weekend as far as in this arena, the job that everybody did. I would just like to thank you, take my hat off to 'em."
North Carolina Coach Roy Williams: "Detroit, Ford Field, this was a marvelous experience. Yeah, there were some more green shirts in there, but our kids have focused all year long on the road and have been a big-time basketball team in some tough places. Again, this was a fantastic setting for the tournament. I wish they could raise the floor and get it to court level, but other than that, this was a wonderful venue."
UConn Coach Jim Calhoun: "By the way, Detroit -- there was a lot of speculation about how good this was going to be. I'm not going out of here as a champ. It's a great place to have a Final Four. I thought the venue was great. I thought the people were great. We're leaving here, except for the outcome on the court, with an incredibly positive experience. Thanks, everybody."
SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, Chair of the Division I Men's Basketball Committee: "
This has been a remarkable week in the Motor City. We had four great teams competing for the championship and we set records not only in Ford Field, but all over the city. I’d be remiss if we didn’t say a championship-sized thank you to a lot of people who worked so hard over the last two years to make this week possible. The friendliness of everyone in Detroit was wonderful. We felt the warmth of your friendship and the gratitude of the city that the Final Four was here. Everyone wanted to show that Detroit is a great city with great people, and they did."
Greg Shaheen, NCAA Senior Vice President for Basketball and Business Strategies: “From an NCAA perspective, this has been an outstanding week. In addition to the attendance records we set for the games in Ford Field and the various ancillary events, we have been able to reach out to the community in so many meaningful and diverse ways. It has truly been a rewarding experience for us. Our goal was to have a lasting and positive impact on the Detroit-metro area. We feel we have done that."
