
Betsey Walkowiak
Director of Student-Athlete Services
Betsey Walkowiak joined the Titans in the summer of 2024 as an Academic and Compliance Coordinator and was promoted to Director of Student-Athlete Services in June of 2025.
In the summer of 2024, she was appointed to the NCAA's Committee on Women’s Athletics which provide leadership and assistance to the association in its efforts to provide equitable opportunities, fair treatment and respect for all women in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics.
A native of Clarkston, Michigan, she was a four-year letterwinner in swimming and diving from Horizon League-rival Green Bay, earning All-Academic honors as a senior.
She was a member of Green Bay's and the Horizon League's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as the Social Media Chair this past season. She also was a part of the Horizon League Council serving as the Student-Athlete Representative and on the Student-Athlete Safety and Health and OneHL, Diversity and Inclusion Committees.
Outside of athletics, she worked as a graduate assistant in the Graduate office at her alma mater.
Walkowiak graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2022 and then earned a Master of Science in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology in 2024.
Academic Services Provided:
The athletic academic coordinator works with the student-athletes, coaches, and professors to assist in the academic success of our student-athletes.
The athletic academic coordinator provides the following services:
- Maintains a feedback system throughout the semester requesting professors to provide information concerning the academic progress of student-athletes
- Monitors the academic progress of all student-athletes on a regular basis,
- Plans programs each semester with the student-athlete to ensure compliance with the NCAA progress towards degree rules,
- Provides assistance with registration program,
- Disseminates information concerning all aspects of the University and referral assistance when deemed necessary
- Informs student-athletes of academic progress each semester
- In addition to assisting planning academic success for our student-athletes.
Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR):

The NCAA Constitution 4.02.2 states that a faculty athletics representative is a member of an institution’s faculty or administrative staff who is designated by the institutions Chief Executive Officer or other appropriate entity to represent the institution and its faculty in the institution’s relationships with the NCAA and its conference(s), if any. Per NCAA Constitution 6.1.3, the institution to serve as faculty athletics representative. An individual so designated shall be a member of the institution’s faculty or an administrator who holds faculty rank and shall not hold an administrative or coaching position in the Athletics Department. Duties of the faculty athletics representative shall be determined by the member institution.
Duties of the Detroit Mercy Faculty Athletics Representative:
• Chair the University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Board
• Serve on the following Detroit Mercy Athletic Committees: Athletic Department Complaint Procedures (Chair), Athletics Financial Appeals, NCAA Violations & Athletic Academic Review Board
• Serve as the liaison between the Detroit Mercy Faculty & Titan Athletic Department in regard to NCAA academic standards and issues which affect student-athletes
• Serve on the Horizon League Faculty Athletics Representative Committee with the following responsibilities:
• Review academic standards and academic concerns which affect student-athletes of the member institutions
• Review league academic standards and policies as they concern eligibility for League championships
• Recommend to the Board League actions or policies which may be needed to enhance the academic progress of the student-athlete
• Advise the board on academic issues which relate to the student-athletes’ participation
• Attend the bi-annual meeting of the Horizon League Executive Council and special meetings as requested

How do I see my class schedule?
- Log into “My Portal” to access all of your academic information.
- On the left hand side, there are options for you to choose to view your academic history, transcript, and student schedule.
- Once you click on the link for student schedule, you will see the details of the class, the time and location and the instructor.
Who do I contact if I have an issue with one of my classes?
- If the issue is with technology, contact the Information Technology department by sending an e-mail to helpdesk@udmercy.edu.
- If you are having an issue understanding a detail of the course, contact the instructor.
- If your concern is with the instructor, set up a time to talk during office hours to resolve the issue.
- If the instructor is not responsive to your request, you may contact the chair of the department to assist in resolving the issue.
How do I add/drop classes?
- Because your classes are linked to your athletic eligibility, you must be sure to follow the guidelines of Detroit Mercy, but also the NCAA.
- You need to consult both your academic advisor and a member of the Student-Athlete Services area for consultation.
- Depending on the timing of the add or drop, you may need to fill out paperwork and get permission to make changes.
- Only in the first week of the term do you have on-line abilities to make changes.
- E-mail or call your academic adviser for direction.
Who is my academic adviser?
- Your academic adviser is listed on your “My Portal” home page.
- Director for Student-Athlete Services Betsey Walkowiak is also listed as an Athletic Adviser.
- Your academic adviser is the person you will consult with for your planning of classes and registration.
- Amy Gasahl and Betsey Walkowiak are listed to alert your adviser that you are a student-athlete and they are able to access your account to ensure you are meeting the NCAA requirements for continuing eligibility.
- All members of the Student-Athlete Services unit are able to answer questions regarding your eligibility and can offer you suggestions for course selection based on your seasons of competition.
How do I get my books from the bookstore if I am on book scholarship?
- If you are receiving a scholarship consisting of books you can pick up books from the University book store.
- You must present your University ID, along with a class schedule, to the Detroit Mercy McNichols Campus Bookstore Manager.
- A book scholarship covers required textbooks and materials (i.e. clickers, chem kits, etc.) for all courses.
- All students are required to rent their books if that title is rentable.
- It is your responsibility to return these books when they are due.
- If you fail to return the book by the due date then you are responsible for the cost of the book.
If I had to purchase a textbook/materials for a class, can this be reimbursed?
- If you are able to work with the bookstore please do so. In the event that you have to purchase it yourself and are on a book scholarship, the Athletic Department will reimburse you.

The Writing Center
The Writing Center is continuing its history of adapting to the changing needs of the university and its students through our refined focus on online-only consultation sessions this fall. Our schedule begins Monday, August 31, and it is visible to students as of today. We have sessions available in 30-minute increments five days a week, and for the first 11 weeks of the term, students can book up to two weeks in advance. All appointments with TWC are one-on-one.
