2020 NCAA Fencing

THE UNIVERSITY OF DETROIT MERCY AND THE DETROIT SPORTS
COMMISSION will host the nation’s top collegiate fencers when the 2020 NCAA Fencing National Championships come to TCF Center in downtown Detroit, March 19 – 22. The 2015 renovation of TCF Center opened the facility to the majestic Detroit River and international views of Windsor, Ontario. The original 12,000 seat arena was repurposed into the stunning 40,000 square foot Grand Riverview Ballroom, the largest in the state of Michigan. The entire center has been updated with the latest technology, including more than 100 digital signs inside, and two gigantic digital signs on the facility's exterior.

The National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships include individual events in each of the six weapons (women’s sabre, women’s foil, women’s épée, men’s sabre, men’s foil and men’s épée). Participants will be selected by the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Committee and announced on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.

The two primary factors for determining selections into the championships are the FSF and the fencer’s placement at NCAA regional competition. A maximum of 144 fencers (24 participants in each event) will qualify to participate in the combined-scoring championships. Fencers compete in a round robin of 24 fencers in five-touch bouts. After the round robin, the top four fencers in each event will fence direct elimination, 15-touch semifinals and championship bouts. Absolute ties for the seeding are broken as follows: within the top four by lot; to get into the top four by five-touch fence-off.
