A four-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Ohio Wesleyan, Karl Zimmerman just finished his second year as an assistant coach for the Detroit Titans and first as the team’s offensive coordinator. Zimmerman’s first season in 2012 saw him assist the offensive coaching staff, helping in scout preparation and video breakdown.
The Titan offense came alive under Coach Zimmerman setting a school record with 87 assists, while finishing with 219 total points in 15 games, second in school history just four points shy of the record recorded in 16 games. The 17 man-up goals on the year were also second in school history. The Titans averaged 10.67 goals per game in conference games and scored 11 in the title game against Siena and seven against one of the toughest defenses in the country in No. 2 Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament, tied for the second most goals by a MAAC school in tournament history.
Under his guidance, junior Alex Maini and sophomore Mike Birney were tabbed All-MAAC Second Team at attack and midfield, respectively, while Andy Hebden (MF) and Nick Melucci (Attk.) were named to the All-Rookie Team. Birney and Maini both ended 2013 tied for third in school history with 40 points and Birney would go on to earn Most Outstanding Player at the MAAC Championship with eight goals on the weekend, including back-to-back game winning goals and a career-best five in the title game.
He is also in charge of the academic performance of the squad as Detroit led the MAAC with 18 All-Academic Team selections and posted a GPA above 3.10.
Prior to Detroit, Zimmerman spent two years coaching at the high school level. He was the offensive coordinator for Fort Collins in Colorado in 2010 and assisted both the junior varsity and varsity programs at Brother Rice in 2011.
He also has been an instructor at a number of camps in the last two years.
Zimmerman earned first team All-North Coast Athletic Conference as a freshman in 2006 and honorable mention All-Conference in 2009. As a senior he tallied 26 goals, 15 assists and 30 ground balls. He helped the Bishops to a NCAC conference title in 2007 and four trips to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Zimmerman graduated from Ohio Wesleyan with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 2009 and is currently pursuing his Master’s in Exercise Science from Oakland.
Zimmerman also works with UDM facilities, a position he began in 2012.
