Before uniting with coach Davis, he was the head coach at Stillman College for two seasons (2006-08) and that came after three years (2003-06) on the staff at Nebraska as the Director of Basketball Operations.

Waller arrived in Nebraska after serving as head coach for five years (1998-03) at Knoxville College. In addition to coaching at Knoxville, Waller also held the title of Vice President of Student Affairs. While at Knoxville College, his teams tallied a 97-61 record over five seasons, including a school record for wins and winning percentage with a 23-8 record in 2001-02.

His other coaching stops have seen him as the associate head coach at Idaho State (1997-98) and an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1996-97), Alabama State (1995-96), Howard (1991-95), Miami (Ohio) (1984-91), Eastern Illinois (1982-84), Western Michigan (1979-82) and Elmhurst College (1978-79).

His career has seem him earn numerous roles in the coaching community serving as regional director of the Black Coaches Association (1988-90) and Chairman of the Assistant Coaches Committee (1989-90) of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

A native of Detroit, Waller earned a degree in Communications from Western Michigan in 1979.
