The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team has filled out its coaching staff for the 2023 season as recent graduate Brett Erskine '21 was named an assistant coach in September of 2022.
"I am happy to have another tremendous student-athlete come back to our program and help mentor the values we have here," said head coach Chris Kolon '09 (MBA). "Brett was a great player for us and a student of the game and I look forward to seeing him work with our kids."
Erskine played five seasons for the Titans and tallied 91 goals, second in school history, and 138 career points, fourth in the school record book.
As a graduate student, he led the team with 20 goals, eight assists and 28 points and was seventh in the ASUN with 1.90 goals per game and 12th with 2.60 points per game. He started all 11 games and scored a point in all 11 and a goal in 10 of them with a career-best seven points on a career-tying six goals against VMI.
As a senior, he started all seven games and led the team in scoring (25), goals (17) and assists (8), while picking up 15 ground balls and causing five turnovers, earning All-MAAC honors.
He started his career helping the Titans tie a school record with nine wins and advancing to the MAAC Championship as a freshman in 2018 as he was second on the team in points (35), goals (22) and assists (13) and led the team and was second in the MAAC and 22nd in the nation in shot percentage at .449.
Off the field, he was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team, and was a five-time member of the Detroit Mercy Athletic Director Honor Roll, a four-time member of the MAAC Academic Honor Roll and a three-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team.
Erskine was also drafted by the Albany Firewolves of the National Lacrosse Team in 2021.
Originally from St. Catharines, Ontario, he attended prep school at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, and earned varsity letters in lacrosse, hockey and cross country and was a team captain for both lacrosse and hockey. In his career, he totaled 213 points on 53 goals and 148 assists along with 181 ground balls, including a great senior campaign that saw him record 55 goals and 32 assists, and was First Team All-Midwest as a sophomore, junior and senior and an All-American in Lacrosse, the Northern Ohio Player of the Year and was awarded the WRA Gold Medal as a senior.
He graduated from the University in 2021 with a degree in Business and earned his MBA in 2022.
