Alex Mendonca was announced as the men's soccer graduate assistant for the 2016-17 season. He lettered for all four seasons for the Titan men's soccer team from 2012-15, playing in 62 matches for Detroit Mercy.
He will assist the program with several day-to-day duties during the 2016-17 season.
In his final season with the Titans in 2015, Mendonca started 12 games and played in all 20, assisting on two goals. He earned the Academic Excellence Award for maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better in each semester during his undergraduate career.
2015: Played in all 20 matches, starting the final 12 ... Had two assists on the season, while tallying eight shots ... Ranked third among midfielders/forwards in minutes played (1,319) ... Assisted on two game-winning goals, the first against Western Illinois (9/11) ... Set up Jason Leslie's game-winning goal at Michigan (9/16) in UDM's 2-1 win over the Wolverines, the first in program history ... 2014: Saw time in 16 matches for the Titans, starting one game ... Played in a season-high 92 minutes against Bowling Green (10/29) ... Started against IUPUI (11/4), receiving 69 minutes of playing time ... Had three shots on the season, two of them on goal ... Had shots on goal in road matches against Dayton (9/7) and Buffalo (9/19) ... Earned 2014 Fall and 2015 Spring Horizon League Academic Honor Roll accolades ... Named to UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
2013: Appeared in 16 matches making four starts on the season ... Recorded one assist on the season in a 5-2 defeat at Cleveland State (10/23) ... Totaled three shots on the season, with one on goal ... Received one yellow card at Valparaiso (11/9)... Named to 2013 Fall and 2014 Spring Horizon League Academic Honor Roll... Named to UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
2012:Â Played in 10 games and made one start... Â Recorded his first start at Michigan State (10/10) and his first shot against Loyola (10/27)... Â Earned his first colegiate point on an assist at Michigan (10/30).
Prep:Â Attended Belle River District High School in Belle River, ON and played outside back.. Spent three years playing for the Crew Soccer Academy Wolves, formerly the Derby County Wolves, in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy... In 2010, started 21 of his 22 appearances as a member of the Wolves' under-15/16 team.. Was also part of the U16 Tecumseh Warriors that captured the Ontario Cup Championship... Also participated in cross country, football and badminton at Belle River.
Personal: Son of Kathleen and Paul Mendonca... Born in Rochester Hills... Has two siblings, Ryan and Daniel... His older brother Ryan was a former goalkeeper on Detroit's men's soccer team in 2003... Enjoys playing and coaching sports (soccer, hockey, badminton)... Was on the winning team that captured the Ontario Cup Championship at 14 with the U16 Tecumseh Warriors... Major is psychology.Â
