James Tyers was named as an assistant coach for the University of Detroit Mercy men’s soccer team on Aug. 19, 2011 and will begin his third year with the team in 2013-14.
Tyers helped the Titans to a Horizon League Regular Season Championship in 2013 as UDM finished 6-1 in the conference and earned the No. 1 seed heading into the Horizon League Tournament.
The former professional soccer player brings 20 years of international coaching experience with him to Detroit. He holds many professional licenses including the USSF “Y”, USSF “D”, UEFA “C” and the Australia “B”.
Tyers began his career in England playing as a young professional for the Peterborough United Football Club, which was then in the English First Division. His next opportunity brought him to play professional ball in the United States before moving his playing career on to Australia.
The former player-coach now dedicates all of his time and efforts to coaching. He was appointed as the Director of Coerver Coaching (Michigan) in 2004. Coerver Coaching is an international organization highly regarded as one of the best coaching methodology for player training and development. 2004 was a busy year for Tyers as he was also selected as the Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Birmingham Bloomfield Soccer Club.
Additional experience includes working with Michigan’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2004-07, spending two years as the Head Girls’ Varsity Coach at Andover H.S., and helping coach multiple organizations in Norfolk (UK).
Tyers earned his Sports Industries Degree in 1990 from the Norfolk College of Art and Technology (now known as the University of Anglia). He resides in Ferndale.
