Keith Jarema

Keith Jarema joined the University of Detroit Mercy men’s soccer staff as an assistant coach prior to the start of the 2013 season specializing in working with the team’s goalkeepers. The 2020-21 season will be his eighth season on the Detroit Mercy men's soccer coaching staff.

Jarema helped coach goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher to Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year honors as well as Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014, the first time in league history that a player has received both accolades.

Steinwascher was also named First Team All-League in 2014 and finished his Titan career as one of the most prolific goalkeepers in school history, ranking tied-for-first in shutouts (19), second in goals against average (1.23) and wins (27) and third in total saves (341) and save percentage (78.2).

The Titan goalkeepers were also integral in the success of a record-setting defense in 2014 that allowed just 19 goals in 20 games for a school-record 0.89 goals against average for the season. Jarema again tutored Steinwascher and the Detroit Mercy keepers that notched the second-best goals against average in school history during the 2015 season at 0.99 goals per game.

Helped coach Robbie Beckwell to the third-best goals against average in school history (1.34), with Beckwell serving as the primary goalkeeper in each of the past two season (2016, 2017). Beckwell posted seven shutouts across his career and finished with a 74.7 save percentage in net, under Jarema's guidance.

Detroit Mercy goalkeepers have earned seven Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week laurels during Jarema's tenure with Steinwascher earned the honor five times, Josh Flamme receiving a weekly nod in 2016 and Beckwell nabbing the honor once during the 2017 campaign.

Jarema helped mentor Second Team All-Horizon League goalkeeper Devin Mendez, who led the league in several statistical categories in conference play during the 2019 season. Mendez led all keepers in save percentage (85.4) and goals against average (0.84), tying for the league lead with four shutouts in eight league matches. He also ranked second in total saves (41) and was a two-time HL Defensive Player of the Week during the 2019 season, as the Titans allowed just seven goals in eight league matches.

He owns a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National “B” License, a USSF National “Goalkeeping” License as well as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) "B" Premier diploma he earned in June 2014.

Jarema came to Detroit Mercy after working extensively with a number of local programs. He was on the Marygrove men’s soccer staff in 2012 and prior to that worked with both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Michigan. In 2011 and 2012, he served with the U-M men’s team and from 2008-11 he was with the women’s program in Ann Arbor.

Before spending time in Ann Arbor, he was with Rochester College working with both the men’s and women’s team since 2006.

Jarema is currently serving as the Director of Goalkeeping in addition to coaching the Michigan Burn club team. He works with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and has served as an evaluator with ODP in Michigan since 2007. He is also the owner/director of Elite Keeper Academy.
