Matt Cameron was named Assistant Coach for the Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing team in January 2026.
Cameron, who began competitive fencing at age 11, brings almost 30 years of coaching experience, which started as a high school student coaching at summer sports camps.
In the early 2000s, Cameron was a founder and member of the Board of Directors that reinstituted fencing at the Chicago Athletic Association, a century-old landmark club. He also developed a neighborhood satellite program, where he coached classes for beginning fencers. He also coached with the Fencing Center of Chicago, working with preteen and teen fencers.
In 2014, Cameron was named Head Fencing Coach at Culver Academies in Culver, Indiana, where he directed all operations for the varsity and junior varsity boys and girls teams for the private boarding high school. While there, he served as the Culver Summer Schools & Camps athletic director for 400 students age 9-17, and hosted regional competitions for USA Fencing. He also served two terms as vice-chair of the USA Fencing Indiana Division.
In 2020, Cameron joined Rain City Fencing Center in Bellevue, Washington, as Associate Head Coach and competitive program lead. There, he designed the club’s national competitive program, which more than tripled the club's membership during his tenure, making Rain City one of the fastest-growing competitive clubs in the country.
Concurrently, Cameron also served as a summer staff coach (2023-25) at the international foil camp in Zalaegerszeg and Békéscsaba, Hungary with Gabor Fekete, and was a guest coach with 2023 Team Canada’s High performance winter intensive camp in Calgary, Canada, with Alex Martin (Epic), Simon Stavissky (Dynamo), and Adam Mathieu (Fencers Club).
In 2025, Cameron returned to his Midwest roots, and joined Renaissance Fencing Club, Troy, Michigan, renowned for its internationally competitive fencing program under the leadership of three-time Olympian Ann Marsh-Senic and three-time World Cup participant and former Moldavian national team coach Anatolie Senic.
Cameron is a three-time gold medalist in veteran men's team foil (2019, 2021, 2022), a silver medalist in Division I-A men’s foil (2002), and a bronze medalist in team Div I Nationals (1998). He medaled in Nationals and Summer Nationals in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2013. He was also a member of the United States 1996 Junior Pan American Team, competing in foil and sabre in Puerto Rico.
Cameron is a Certified Foil Prévôt, L’Académie d’Armes de France, which he earned at Duke University in 2019. He is also a USA Fencing Official for foil, epee, and sabre.
Cameron’s early training was with coach Bakhyt Abdikulov, World Cup gold medalist and USSR National Champion. He also trained with Vladimir Nazlymov, Gia Kvaratskhelia, Slava Gregoriev, Ilgar Mamedov, and Anvar Ibragimov, and in 1999, trained at the Lagardère Paris Racing Club in Paris, France.
In other sports, Cameron was also a member of the Video Coaching Staff for the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Blackhawks from 2001-2003.
He attended Loyola University in Chicago as a political science major and Chicago’s Columbia College, where he studied interactive media.Â
