Malin Smith joined the Titans as an assistant coach working with the throwers in the fall of 2023.
In her first season, she saw senior Kayla Smith win the weight at the Horizon League Championships, the first Titan indoor championship winner since 2000 and the first women's weight winner since 2005. During the indoor season, she set a career-best in the weight with a throw of 17.88m for second in school history. In outdoors, Smith scored at the Horizon League Championships, taking third in the hammer (50.10m) and fourth in the discus (41.37m).Â
Smith herself was a standout thrower in college, starting at Cincinnati and ending her career at Texas Tech.
In her final season with the Red Raiders, she won the discus at the Big 12 Championships, while tossing her career best of 57.84 meters for first at the Jim Click Shootout. In her first season, she was third in the discus at the Big 12 Championships and then garnered eighth at the NCAA West Regionals and third for All-American honors at the NCAA West Championships with a toss of 56.78 meters.
With the Bearcats, she was runner-up in the indoor American Athletic Conference Championships as a freshman and claimed third twice in the outdoor league meet in the event.
A native of Lansing, Michigan, and a graduate of Waverly High School, she won the 2018 state title in the discus with a state record toss of 163-09 and added a second-place finish in the shot put. She also finished second and fifth in the discus as a junior, respectively, after placing third and second, respectively, as a sophomore, and swept both events at the conference meet her last three years. On the club circuit, she placed fifth at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the shot put in 2018 to earn All-America honors, took second in both throws at the Midwest Meet of Champions in 2018 and competed in the AAU Junior Olympic Games, finishing second in the shot put, in 2017.
She graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in Psychology in 2023.
