Cortez Garland

Cortez Garland was named a graduate assistant coach for the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team in the summer of 2025.

Garland played college basketball at Albion for four seasons before transferring and finishing up his career at Trine in 2023-24, earning All-MIAA three times. 

In his final season, he started all 33 games and led Trine to a 29-4 record and a national championship. He led the team with 16.2 points and netted 22 points in the title contest over top-seeded Hampden-Sydney. He was selected an All-American, the NCAA Tournament MVP for his performance in leading Trine to a national title, and All-NABC Second-Team. 

At Albion, he saw action in 69 games, starting 63, and tallied 14.2 points, 2.6 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. He posted 19.7 points as a junior - which included a career-high 37 points against Olivet - and 16.5 points as a senior. He was also the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. 

The Detroit native graduated from Renaissance High School in 2018 and then served as an assistant coach at Trine last year. He is also a coach on the AAU circuit. 

Garland graduated from Albion in  2023 with a degree in Marketing Management and is now enrolled in UDM's MBA program.
