Mekye Phelps returned to Detroit Mercy in October of 2021 after spending seven years in the Athletic Communications office at Oakland University.
 
During his tenure at Oakland, Phelps spent four years as a Coordinator of Athletic Communications handling all media relations and social media responsibilities for women's basketball, men’s soccer, baseball and women’s tennis in addition to developing and overseeing the student internship program.
 
Phelps joined Oakland in July of 2014 spending his first three years as a Communications Assistant also serving as the main media relations contact or softball, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s cross country in addition to women’s basketball and men’s soccer. Phelps also provided on-site host media relations assistance for the 2015 Horizon League softball championships, 2015 and 2018 track and field championships and 2014 volleyball and men’s soccer championships.
 
Prior to joining Oakland, Phelps spent two years as a Sports Information Assistant at the University of Detroit Mercy as the main communications contact for women's soccer, softball and men's and women's fencing while assisting as a men's and women's basketball and lacrosse statistician. Phelps also provided on-site host media relations assistance at the 2009 NCAA Final Four and 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional both held at Ford Field in Detroit.
 
In 2007, Phelps served a dual role as a communications intern at both Wayne State and College Hockey America (CHA) working with WSU women's hockey, cross country and tennis while handling men's and women's conference hockey media relations efforts including the CHA postseason tournament.
 
After spending five years in the automotive communications field, Phelps decided to pursue his dream of working in the collegiate athletics field and started volunteering in the athletic communication office at Eastern Michigan in 2003. Two years later, Phelps became a Graduate Assistant handling media relations responsibilies for baseball, women's soccer, tennis, cross country and served as the men's basketball main contact during the 2006-07 season. He also helped coordinate host institution media relations responsibilities for the 2007 Mid-American Baseball Tournament and 2004 NCAA Cross Country Great Lakes Regional.
 
While working to pursue his dream career in collegiate athletics, Phelps held a second job as a Security Officer for 11 and-a-half years at MGM Grand Detroit Casino from January 2004 to July 2015.
 
Phelps began his public relations career at Eisbrenner Public Relations in 1998 working with automotive clients as an Assistant Account Executive until 2003.
 
Phelps earned a Master of Science Degree in Sport Management from Eastern Michigan University in 2007 and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications with a Public Relations emphasis from Michigan State University in 1997.
 
A native of Detroit, Phelps currently resides in Canton, Mich.
