James Tinkey became the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications at the University of Detroit Mercy in August of 2015. He then moved to the marketing office as an Associate Director of Marketing and Promotions in 2019 and became the Director of Marketing and Promotions in the winter of 2021.
He also served as the interim head men's golf coach for the 2021-22 season and is now the sport supervisor for men's and women's golf.
In 2017, Tinkey took control of the Titans' graphic design efforts for use on DetroitTitans.com, in print and across all social media accounts.
Tinkey came to Detroit Mercy from Slippery Rock University, where he spent two years as a member of the athletic communications staff. At SRU, Tinkey was the primary contact for a nationally ranked field hockey team, as well as the women’s volleyball and softball teams.
Prior to working at Slippery Rock, Tinkey spent two years working as an assistant for sports information and athletic operations at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, Pa. In addition to his extensive duties within the athletic department, Tinkey served as an assistant coach with the Redhawks’ men’s basketball and golf teams.
Tinkey also served as the Vice President of and player on Michigan State University’s Club Baseball Team, where he pitched and played third base for the Spartans.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., he received his undergraduate degree in kinesiology, with a specialization in sports administration from Michigan State University, before obtaining his Master's degree from Slippery Rock University.
