Behind freshman Lauren Roffey's (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) first career goal, which proved to be the game winner, the Detroit women's soccer team rallied from a second half-deficit for a 2-1 victory over visiting Valparaiso Friday afternoon at Titan Field.
After being down 1-0 and outshot 11-2 in the first half, Detroit (6-5-1, 3-1 HL) turned the tables in the second half, scoring two goals and outshooting Valparaiso (8-4-1, 1-3 HL) by an 8-4 margin.
Sophomore Selena Stanski (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) tallied her fourth goal of the season and added an assist - as did junior Emily Kiely (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) - on Roffey's game-winning marker.
Freshman goalkeeper Joanna Hinde (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower) made eight saves en route to her sixth win of the year.
"This was a good win against a very good and organized Valparaiso team," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "I give a lot of credit to our girls, who worked really hard on their fitness and practice during the week. It paid off today, especially in the second half as we maintained our intensity and battled physically which led to our second come-from-behind conference victory. To get three points heading into next week's Wright State game was a big step for our team to build on."
Valparaiso went ahead in the first half on a goal by Kendall Brown, assisted by Jessie White. The Titans caught a break later in the frame as Laura Murphy beat Hinde high to the right side but her shot rang off the cross bar, keeping it a one-goal game.
In the second half, during the 65th minute, Stanski got the ball approximately 23 yards out and struck a well-placed shot over the outstretched arms of Crusaders goalie Mele Cabral for the equalizer.
At the 69:19 mark, Stanski dumped in a long pass to Kiely, who dribbled and pushed a pass over to Roffey on the right side of the 18-yard line box. Roffey uncorked a blast which beat Cabral to the upper left corner to give the Titans its first lead of the match, 2-1.
"Once I got the ball at the top of the 18-yard line, I saw a clear lane and took a shot," said Roffey. "It was very exciting for my first collegiate goal to be a game-winner. This win was a big boost for our team and hopefully we can use this and put together a winning streak heading into our next two games against IPFW and Wright State."
"After the first half, we were down on ourselves," said senior forward Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball). "However, we were in the same situation on the road at Youngstown State and were able to come back and the get the win so there was no reason as to why we could not do it again. With that in mind, we gave a much better effort in the second half, took some shots and played with sense of urgency to avoid losing another conference home match to get the victory."
Detroit welcomes IPFW to Titan Field for a non-conference match on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
