The Detroit Titans women's soccer team recorded its fifth shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory over visiting IPFW Tuesday afternoon at Titan Field.

Detroit (7-5-1) was led defensively by senior captain goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry (Flushing, MI/Flushing), who made her first start of the season after recovering from a knee injury suffered during the summer. Freshman goalkeeper Madeline Franko (Dearborn, MI/Dearborn Heights) also saw her first career action in the second half helping preserve the team shutout.

"My knee feels fine and it was really good to be back on the field playing for this team," said Fortenberry. "Even though I didn't face many shots, getting the chance to get back into the flow of a game and help the team win feels great."

Offensively, the Titans were led by junior forward Emily Kiely (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) who tallied a pair of second half goals. Senior forward Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) chipped in with her first assist of the season as well as her second game-winning goal. Sophomore Selena Stanski (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) also added two assists, while freshman Alison Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) recorded a helper on the game-winning goal. For the game, Detroit outshot IPFW (0-14-4) by a 22-4 margin.

"One of our goals was to keep the ball and create some quality scoring chances," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "I think the team did a good job of doing this today which is very important as we head into this weekend's games against Wright State and Loyola, who are both very athletic teams," added Lupenec. "It was good to see Emily be very patient and get two goals along with having Katie back which give us some experience in net. This was a good win and I think we are peeking at the right time."

Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Stanski headed the ball into the 18-yard line box to Kochanski, who ripped a low shot into the left corner beating IPFW goalie Meagan McLaughlin.

In the second half, Kochanski and Kiely executed a give and go which Kiely finished with a shot to the lower right corner.

UDM's final goal came off some tic-tac-toe passing as Suschak sent a horizontal pass to Stanski who one-touched it up to Kiely who broke in and beat McLaughlin to the low right side.

Detroit resumes Horizon League play with a road match against Wright State on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
