The Detroit Titans women's soccer team concluded the regular season with a 2-1 setback at Green Bay in Horizon League action Sunday afternoon at Santaga Stadium.
With the loss, the Titans ended the regular season with an 8-8-1 overall record and 4-4 mark in conference play. UDM will enter the Horizon League Tournament as a No. 5 seed and will travel to the fourth-seeded Butler Bulldogs on Sunday Nov. 2. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Detroit was led offensively by senior
Melanie Slusher (Sterling Heights, MI/Stevenson) who recorded her second goal of the season on a feed from senior
Nicole Gipson (Sterling Heights, MI/Stevenson).
"Its always difficult to win on the road in this league and I am disappointed that we didn't get a win or tie today, especially after leading 1-0," commented head coach
Mike Lupenec. "We could not control some of the mistakes made today and Green Bay made us pay for them. However, we have a week to get some people healthy and get ready for the tournament and I look for us to make a solid run."
Detroit took a 1-0 lead on a corner kick set piece at the 24th minute of the first half. Gipson sent in a high shot from the right corner that drifted to the left post, where Slusher was stationed and headed it in past Green Bay goalkeeper Maddie Drusch for her second career goal.
Green Bay responded with the equalizer in the 30th minute as Laura Hamer got behind Detroit's back line on a through ball from Claire Townsend and put a shot over senior goalkeeper
Katie Fortenberry (Flushing, MI/Flushing), who had to come out and challenge the shot.
In the second half, Green Bay turned up the pressure and eventually took a 2-1 lead at the 65:36 mark. A failed Detroit attempt to clear to ball from the back line ricocheted off a defender and ended up on the foot of Sharon Zubrey. Zubrey then broke in alone forcing Fortenberry to once again come out and try to cut off the angle. However, the attempt was unsuccessful as Zubrey placed a shot over Fortenberry's out-stretched arms into the back of the net.
Later in the frame, Slusher almost got her second goal of the game on another corner kick, but Drusch stopped her volley attempt with diving save.
Drusch came up big once again in the 86th minute as Slusher came up from her defensive position and ripped a shot to the right side, which Drusch extended making an incredible diving stop to preserve the lead.
