The Detroit Titans women's soccer team won its third consecutive game in convincing fashion with a 4-0 win over conference foe Cleveland State Friday afternoon at Titan Field.
The Titans' offense tallied a season-high four goals led by freshman midfielder Alexandra Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) who scored her first career goal, while freshman goalkeeper Joanna Hinde (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower) led Detroit defensively with her fourth shutout of the season.
With the victory, Detroit (5-4-1, 2-0) remains undefeated in conference play while Cleveland State falls to 4-6-1 (0-1-1).
Three of Detroit's four goal goals came off set piece corner kicks with the first from senior forward Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) for the game-winner. Sophomore midfielder Archana Wadhawan (Troy, MI/Troy) added her first goal of the season along with an assist. Junior Emily Kiely (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) tallied her second goal of the year with an assist while sophomore Selena Stanski (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) added a season-high three assists.
"The difference in the game was our play on set pieces as we got three of four goals off our corner kicks while we defended Cleveland State's opportunities very well," said Mike Lupenec. "Overall, I am proud of how we played and it's good to be 2-0 in conference play with a three-game winning streak. We look forward to an even greater challenge against Butler, who is undefeated conference play on Sunday."
Detroit got its first set piece goal off a corner kick at the 19:16 mark of the first half. Stanski sent the ball in on a cross, which Kochanski was able to get about seven yards in front of the goal. She controlled the ball and beat CSU goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich with a shot to the right side.
Later in the frame, UDM went up 2-0 as Kiely blasted a shot which rebounded directly off Zinkiewich that Wadhawan was able to put into the open net.
In the second half, Detroit took a commanding 3-0 lead as Stanski and Kiely connected for the second set piece goal off a corner kick to beat backup Cleveland State goalie Shannon Saunders.
"Since we scored our first goal off a corner kick, I knew we would have a good chance on the next opportunity," said Kiely. "I positioned myself on the left side and was able to put the ball on net as it came through traffic. I am happy that I was able to contribute towards our win today."
UDM's final set piece goal came at the 70:46 mark. Wadhawan sent the ball in off a corner kick, and it was played back to her from Stanski. She then sent in the second cross which was volleyed in by Suschak for a 4-0 lead.
"It felt great to get my first goal," said Alexandra Suschak. "I was surprised to the see the ball go back out to Archana who kicked the initial corner kick. Once she sent the cross back in from Selena, I was able to score on a volley. We need to stay strong and continue to execute on set pieces to keep this three-game streak alive."
"We played very well today and I look for us to keep up the momentum heading into our game on Sunday," said Alison Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville). "Our play on set pieces was very key and I was happy to see my sister get her first career goal off one of them."
