Detroit's men's soccer team closed out the weekend with a 5-2 loss against Green Bay in Horizon League action Sunday afternoon at Titan Field. With this loss, the Titans are now 2-7-1 overall (1-2-1 HL), while the Phoenix improve to 3-5-3 on the season (1-1-1 HL).
Phoenix senior Tosaint Ricketts, who ended the afternoon with a hat trick and seven points, fed the ball to junior Ilya Ksenidi in the 29th minute to set up the first tally of the game. Ksenidi took a shot from the right side and saw it trickle past the goal line to the left corner of the net.
Ricketts netted Green Bay's next goal about four minutes later after, which again came from the right side. The ball bounced and went into the lower left side to put the score at 2-0.
At the 40:20 mark, senior Simon Zahra took a free kick, and the wall of defenders could not stop the ball as it was able to find the back of the net to give Detroit its first goal of the game and Zahra's second of the season.
In the 70th minute, junior Nick Dreshaj had a shot attempt that was blocked, but teammate Joe Hess was there to receive the rebound and was able to put the ball past senior UWGB keeper Adam Stikl for his first goal of the season and to tie the game at two.
Ricketts scored the game-winning goal for the Phoenix at 76:29 after a breakaway, with freshman Tony Walls and junior David Znaty each earning an assist on the goal.
Sophomore JC Banks and Ricketts scored the final two goals for Green Bay in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Detroit freshman netminder Paul Graf started his first collegiate game and tallied two saves, while allowing two goals in 45 minutes of play. Senior #Luke Paneccasio# played the second half for the Titans and collected two saves, while allowing three goals. Stikl was in net the entire game for Green Bay and ended with four saves after allowing two goals.
Detroit had a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks, while Green Bay tallied 19 shots to the Titans' 16.
At halftime, the Titans' 1996 MCC Championship team was recognized for its efforts in becoming the first Detroit men's soccer squad to appear in post-season play.
UDM plays its next game at Wright State in Dayton, OH, on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
