The Detroit men's basketball team used a dominating second half to lift the Titans to a 62-47 victory over in-state rival Eastern Michigan on Saturday night. The win gave head coach
Ray McCallum his first victory as Detroit moved to 1-2 on the year.
Junior
Eulis Stephens (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) led the way with a team-high 13 points off the bench, while juniors
Xavier Keeling (Huntsville, AL/J.O. Johnson) and
Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) each added 12.
Detroit trailed by six, 24-18, early in the second half, but the Titans came alive with an explosive 32-12 run over the next 11 minutes. Kennedy started the spurt with two-straight baskets that was followed by Keeling's layup, which tied the game. Eastern then took the lead again, briefly, with a basket, but freshman
Donavan Foster (Chicago, IL/Curie) put the Titans in front for good with a three, giving Detroit a 27-26 advantage.
Two straight 3-pointers by Stephens and junior
Nemanja Jokic (Sombor, Serbia/Mechanical) followed as Detroit extended its lead to seven, 33-26, with 14:38 left. Jokic would then hit another trey after an EMU bucket giving the Titans an eight-point cushion, 36-28.
Eastern (1-3) fought back to cut the Detroit lead to two, 36-34 at 12:21, but the Titans would never relinquish the lead going on a 14-2 spurt to take control of the game. Kennedy added six during the run, while Stephens chipped in with four.
L.J. Fraier was the high man for the Eagles with a game-best 14 points, while Solomon Harrison netted 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Detroit outrebounded its opponent for the third-straight game, 30-27, while forcing 26 EMU turnovers, including 11 steals for the second-straight contest.
After starting the game just 6-of-20 from the field, the Titans finished the contest hitting 17 of its next 31 field goals, shooting 45-percent for the game. UDM also hit 7-of-19 from behind the arc, after going 1-of-7 in the first period.
It was a defensive battle to start the game, but Detroit scored the first six points just four minutes into the contest. The Titans then went cold from the field as EMU answered with a 12-2 run to take a 12-8 lead with six minutes to go in the first half. After UDM tied the game at 12-12, the Eagles went into the half with a three-point lead, 21-18.
The Titans return to action on Wednesday when Detroit makes its first of five trips into Chicago on the season, this time to take on BIG EAST member DePaul. Tip-off is slated for 8:30 p.m. (EST).
