Using a press style defense against Colgate, the Detroit Titans women's basketball team was able to capture a 61-51 victory over the Raiders at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, NY, Saturday afternoon. With this win, Detroit improves to 2-3 overall, while Colgate falls to 2-5 on the year.
UDM freshman
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) started off the scoring in the game with a 3-pointer, which was followed by two straight treys from Colgate sophomore Sami Kozlowski, with the last at 18:25. The Titans were then able to hold the Raiders scoreless for the next five minutes, which led Detroit to take an 11-6 advantage after senior
Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) made both of her attempts at the line.
With the score knotted at 16 at 9:28, which is the closest the Raiders would get to the Titans the remainder of the game, Detroit went on an 8-0 scoring spurt, which included two 3-pointers from Brown to put the score at 24-16. UDM took its largest lead of the game at 1:33 after junior
Brigid Mulroy (Birmingham, MI/Marian) poured in her signature shot from beyond the arc to have the scoreboard read 35-22. Colgate went on to score six unanswered points in the final minute, but the Titans took a seven-point lead with them into the break (35-28).
Both teams traded buckets back and forth in the second half and Colgate pulled within four (41-37) at 14:14, but that was the closest the Titans would allow the Raiders to get the rest of the contest. Just under two minutes later, freshman
Jaleesa Trussell (Racine, WI/Racine Case) pushed Detroit's lead up to nine (37-46) with a made lay-up.
Senior
Zemora Davis (Detroit, MI/Community) hit two straight jumpers to put the score at 52-42 at 8:12 and, after a made basket by Colgate freshman Candice Green 20 seconds later, neither team scored for about three minutes. Mulroy, who ended with a game-high 16 points, stopped Detroit's scoring drought at 3:46 with a made basket in the paint to give the Titans a 54-46 advantage. Brown and Allen, who scored a team second-best 11 points, each faced a one-and-one situation at the foul line in the final 20 seconds and they each made both attempts to help secure Detroit's victory.
Kozlowski led Colgate with 15 points, while Raider sophomore Georgia Gier collected a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Detroit shot 42 percent (22-of-53), while the Raiders had an 18-of-50 showing from the field. Colgate outrebounded the Titans, 34-23, but UDM had a 10-6 advantage in steals.
The Titans will return to action when they face Albany in New York on Dec. 1 at 5 p.m.
