Men's Soccer Falls to Loyola in Second Round of Horizon League Championship

Box Score (in pdf)

The #9 Detroit Titans men's soccer team faced #5 Loyola in the second round of the Horizon League Championship Sunday evening and UDM fell by a score of 4-0 at Loyola Soccer Park in Chicago, IL. The Titans end the season with a 4-13-3 overall record, while the Ramblers improve to 10-6-3 on the year.

"We got to this game because of a great 110 minute effort at Green Bay, which we knew that we had to match again tonight, but unfortunately in the second half we were overmatched by Loyola," said UDM head coach Morris Lupenec. "Sometimes the effort is there, but then there are times that the other team is just better than you are and that was the case in the second half tonight.

"This was not a good game for the seniors to end their career with the Detroit men's soccer program, but I do want to say thank you for all of their great efforts and contributions to this team. I also want to send a special thank you to Renato Susnja, who not only was a great leader and captain, but he also had a great year for UDM this season."

Loyola senior Keum Sung Kim scored in the 36th minute off a pass from sophomore Chris Mills and the Ramblers went into the break with a 1-0 advantage. Junior Mark Halma took a hard shot, which went past an outstretched UDM junior goalkeeper Bryan Kloss (Fraser, MI/Bishop Foley Catholic) into the bottom left corner at the 50:20 mark and senior Kevin Harrigan earned the assist.

Loyola freshman Eric Marofske dished out a pass to Halma, who scored his second goal of the contest at the 64:53 mark. Mills tacked on another goal for the Ramblers in the 84th minute, with the assist being accredited to Harrigan.

Susnja tallied two shots for the Titans, while senior Joe Hess (Canton, MI//Canton), sophomore Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) and junior Nick Dreshaj (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) each added one against the Ramblers.

Kloss started the game for the Titans in net and tallied two saves, while allowing three goals in just over 69 minutes of action. Senior Luke Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Calvin) replaced Kloss and collected a save and allowed one Loyola goal. Senior Brian Byrne saw action the entire game for the Ramblers and tallied two saves.

The Titans close out the 2008 campaign and will return to action in August 2009.
