Box Score
Despite a spirited second-half comeback, the UDM men's basketball team lost its third straight game dropping a 58-38 decision to Bowling Green on Sunday night in Andersen Arena.
Detroit (2-6) was led by junior
Woody Payne's (Inkster, MI/Ypsilanti) 12 points, including a career-best six steals. Senior
Chris Hayes (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) netted 10 points and five rebounds, while senior
Michael Harrington (Country Club Hills, IL / Rich Central) added seven points and three caroms.
UDM fell behind early and trailed by as many as 25 in the second period. Down 40-15 at the 16:15 mark, Detroit went on a 23-8 spurt in the next 12 minutes to cut the Falcon lead to just 10, 48-38. The Titans started the run with seven quick points thanks to four markers by Payne, who also added two steals during that span.
BGSU (4-4) then pushed its lead back up to 24, 46-22, with back-to-back treys midway through the second half, but UDM fought back with eight straight points to get within 16, 46-30 with 8:04 remaining in the contest.
A bucket by Bowling Green ended that streak, but another Titan 8-0 charge, led by Harrington's five points, followed and UDM trailed by just 10, 48-38 at the four-minute mark. Detroit, though, was unable to get any closer as the red, white and blue faltered down the stretch failing to score another point.
The Titan offense struggled for much of the game, ending the night shooting just 23 percent from the field, including a 1-for-10 mark from beyond the arc. For the first time this season, Detroit was outrebounded, but the Titans did manage to force 17 Falcon turnovers.
UDM will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 17, when the Titans host Aquinas on Spencer Haywood Night. The game is part of a Titan doubleheader with the women hosting Morehead State at 5 p.m.; with the men to follow at 7:35 p.m. Detroit will honor the former U-D star during the men's contest, while giving out a commemorative card to the first 1,000 fans in attendance.
