Six Titans Score in Double Figures to Help Detroit Claim Double Overtime Win at EMU

Box Score (in pdf)

For the first time in 27 years, the Detroit Titans women's basketball team defeated Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti as the Titans held off the Eagles in double-overtime, 76-75, Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The last time UDM defeated EMU on the road was on Dec. 2, 1981 when the Titans claimed a 52-47 victory.

With the game tied at 72 in the second overtime, freshman Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) put the ball on the deck, made a spinning move to the hoop and connected on a lay-up while being fouled in the process to give Detroit a 74-72 lead with 15 seconds remaining. Jones missed the ensuing free-throw, but senior Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) grabbed the offensive board to maintain possession for the Titans. After an EMU foul on the in-bounds play, junior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) calmly knocked down both free throws to extend UDM's lead to four, 76-72. Eastern's freshman Tavelyn James hit a 3-pointer to pull the Eagles within one, 76-75, but Detroit was able to in-bound the ball and hold on for the win.

In the first half, Detroit jumped out to a 7-0 lead heading into the first media time out, which was aided by Mulroy's two 3-point buckdets. The Titans then extended their lead to 13-2 as Mulroy and freshman Lauren Allen (Rochester Hill, MI/Rochester) connected on a triple each and on the defensive end, UDM held EMU to only two points over the first 13 minutes of play.

Down the stretch, Detroit outscored EMU 29-22 to take a 41-24 advantage into the lockerroom. The Titans shot a blistering 5-of-9 (55 percent) from behind the arc and 48 percent from the field on 16-for 33 shooting in the first stanza.

Eastern came out of the gate on a 12-2 run to begin the second half, which cut Detroit's lead to 43-36 with 15:32 remaining. UDM responded with a 7-2 run of its own to increase its lead to 50-38 half way through the frame, however, EMU countered with back-to-back treys from James and a bucket by sophomore Sydney Huntley-Rodgers to pull the Eagles within four, 50-46.

Each team traded baskets over the next six minutes with UDM still clinging to a four-point margin, 62-58, with just under four minutes remaining in regulation. Eastern got a 2-pointer from Schrock and two free throws from senior Shana McKinney to tie the game at 62, before redshirt freshman Talicia Washington (Auburn, Hills, MI/Avondale) and Brown connected on clutch buckets to put the Titans back up by four, 66-62, with 1:24 remaining. Once again, EMU responded as Schrock hit a jumper with just over a minute to go and then connected on another 2-pointer with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 66.

In the first overtime frame, Jones and Brown opened up scoring putting UDM up 70-66 before EMU tied the contest on two made McKinney free throws. Once again, Detroit had the ball with a chance to win with 22 seconds remaining, but Mulroy was unable to hit a jumper from the left side sending the game into a second overtime period.

Detroit's 76 points was the team's highest offensive output of the season as six Titans scored in double figures and were led by Washington who collected 14 points. Mulroy tallied 13 points, while Brown added 12 on a 6-of-9 showing from the field. Allen and junior Chanica Hall (Minneapolis, MN/Benilde-St. Mararet's) also chipped in 11 points each, while Jones dished out a game-high 10 assists. For the game, UDM shot 44 percent from the floor on 31-for-69 shooting from the floor.

In addition to going perfect 14-for-14 from the charity stripe, EMU had four players in double-figures as Schrock led the way scoring a game high-22 points. James added 17 points, while Huntley-Rogers and Mckinney tallied 16 and 12 points, respectively.

A 107-102 setback to Kentucky on Dec. 28, 1983 in Detroit marks the last time the Titans played in a double-overtime contest.

The Titans will travel to Buffalo, NY, for a match-up at Canisius on Sunday, Dec. 28. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
