Women's Soccer Blanks IUPUI for First Win of the Season, 1-0

Box Score

Behind a solid defensive effort spearheaded by freshman goalkeeper Joanna Hinde's (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower) first career shutout, the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team blanked IUPUI, 1-0, for its first victory of the season Monday afternoon at Titan Field.

Hinde was solid in net recording six saves while anchoring a defense which limited IUPUI's (0-2) scoring opportunities and rebounded effectively from allowing three goals in Detroit's (1-1) season opener last week.

"We missed the early scoring opportunities in the first half, but defensively we did a great job," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "Our effort was there and it was good to get a win to build our confidence after last week's loss. "Overall, I am happy with the result, but there is still room for improvement."

Offensively, sophomore midfielder Selena Stanski (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) tallied the game-winning goal at the 84:35 mark of the second half breaking the scoreless tie. Junior midfielder Lauren Moss (Berkley, MI/Lake Orion) took the ball in space down the right side of the field and fed junior forward and team captain, Emily Kiely (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) at the 18 yard line. Kiely, turned and delivered a crossing pass to Stanski over the middle, who took the ball and beat IUPUI goalie Jamie Farrell with a shot to the right side post from 10 yards out.

"Coming into the game we felt a lot of pressure to win," said Stanski. "We didn't capitalize on early chances but we didn't give up and it paid off. It feels great to get our first win of the year and get the monkey off our backs."

UDM is off until next week when the Titans welcome in-state rival Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Titan Field. Kick off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
