The Detroit Titans women's soccer team dropped its second consecutive road match as in-state rival and Big Ten foe Michigan State downed the Titans 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Okemos High School. The game was moved to OHS due to unplayable field conditions at MSU's DeMartin Stadium.
Detroit (2-3-1) had trouble handing MSU's (8-0) high powered offense, which entered the game ranked 15th in the country averaging 3.14 goals-per-game. Michigan State outshot Detroit 18-5, tallying five goals, which equaled its highest offensive output of the season.
The lone bright spot for the Titans came in the second half as sophomore Selina Stanski (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) scored her team-high third goal of the year on a penalty kick, which was only the third goal MSU had allowed all season.
"When you are playing a team of this caliber, everyone must contribute and be ready to play," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "Some of our young players will be able to use this as a learning experience to build on.
"Another positive that we can take from this game is that we played a lot better in the second half," added Lupenec. "We were able to make some adjustments, keep the ball more and correct things we didn't do in the first half. But, you half to tip your hat to a team like MSU that is very talented athletically, which is why they are undefeated."
UDM found itself down midway though the first half as the Spartans tallied three goals in an 11 minute span to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
MSU's Cara Freeman scored the game's first goal at the 15:20 mark with a header off a rebound which beat freshman goalkeeper Joanna Hinde (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower).
Detroit had chance for the equalizer as Stanski blasted a shot from around the penalty marker but it was right into the arms of MSU netminder Lindsay Wrege. Lauren Hill and Laura Heyboer then added two more goals for the Spartans at the 22:00 and 26:13 mark respectively.
In the second half, Hill added her second goal of the game to put MSU ahead 4-0.
UDM once again came close to getting on the board on a corner kick set piece. Freshman Alexandria Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) sent in a feed which was cleared out to senior Nicole Gipson (Sterling Heights, MI/Stevenson), who sent a low shot to the right side of the goal which backup MSU goalie Danielle Petri made a diving save to stop.
Detroit finally broke through with Stanski's penalty kick goal with 1:52 left in the game. She placed a shot behind Petri, who got a hand on the ball but could not prevent it from reaching the back of the net.
MSU came back 42 seconds later with a goal by Katie Rehor for the 5-1 win.
Detroit continues its six-match road stint with a non-conference game against Bowling Green on Friday, Sept. 19 at 5:00 p.m.
