The Detroit Titans women's soccer team was blanked 4-0 by Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green Friday afternoon at Cochrane Field. With the loss Detroit falls to 2-4-1 on the season while Bowling Green improves to 4-2-2 and is unbeaten over its last five games.
After a solid defensive effort by both teams in the first half, Bowling Green 's offense took off as the Falcons tallied 14 second half shots leading to four goals. For the game, BGSU outshot UDM 18-3.
"It's disappointing to see how we played so well in the first half only to let it slip away in the second half," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "We made some costly mistakes that just can't happen. However, I look for us to rebound from this loss and turn things around heading into our first conference game against Youngstown State."
Detroit wasted little time putting the pressure on BGSU with its first scoring chance just two minutes into the game. Sophomore Selina Stanski (Tecumseh, ON /St. Anne's Secondary) sent in a cross from the right side line which senior Nicole Gipson (Sterling Heights, MI /Stevenson) redirected with a header to the left side that hit the post. However, that would be the only opportunity for Titans as the game remained scoreless heading into the half.
At the 50:50 mark of the second half, Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead on a corner kick set piece as Katelyn Turner was able to move through a crowd in front of the net and head in Katie Stephenson's cross for the game-winning goal.
BGSU then went ahead 2-0 as the Titans were credited with an own goal at 71:00 mark. The ball was sent in from approximately 30 yards out which cleared the outstretched arms of freshman goalkeeper Joanna Hinde (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower) and freshman Rebecca Pidgeon (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) was unable to stop its momentum with a header attempt that when into the back of the net.
Bowling Green's Leah Johnson then added a goal in the 88th minute followed by another from Kristin McDonald to wrap up the 4-0 win.
Detroit continues its six-match road stint and begins conference play with a match against Youngstown State on Friday, Sept. 26 at 4:00 p.m.
